I’m loving the Matt colour of my new bike but the frame above the stays where the wheel is seems to be chipping so easily!
Anyone know of any protection ideas or tiny mudguards?

I don’t really want to wrap the entire frame

Get some helicopter tape and just protect the areas you are concerned about.
I like this stuff:

Gusset TEK Tape Frame Protector | Biketart

I find that the 75mm wide does for most things. It is also easy to manage when applying.

I have a 2-page guide to applying bike tape to your entire frame. It was written with helpful tips from experienced users (about five of them if I recall correctly). It's free, so send me a message with your email address and I'll send you a copy if you want.

I've always used Invisiframe but any good wrap should be fine, as for mudguards I've just fitted a small one from Sico MTB and love it, they make them bespoke for each frame, neat and reasonably priced too.
I have no doubt that Invisiframe is of good quality. My grandson's bike has been professionally Invisiframed and it still looks pretty good and has lasted well. The problem is that in several places it has been damaged (without damage to the frame underneath, so it has done its job). It also has multiple places where, for whatever reason, the edge of the Invisitape has lifted and dirt has got in, showing as a light brown discolouration. So it is now looking its age. The flaws that can be seen are all either damage to the Invisiframe or lifting of parts of the edges.

My bike, is protected with 75mm wide bike tape, cut to shape from a long length, all done by me. Some sections of the bike have a double thickness. If I get any damage or lifting, I just remove it and reapply some fresh tape. Good as new!

I know what you mean, some places can be hard to get to stick to the frame, usually it's over tight places, when I apply it and it's almost dried I go over the edges with a hairdryer and firmly press then down, that usually works for me, there are also places I've had to trim it with scissors to get the dam thing to go over the frames curves bit thats only a few places.
All in all it's certainly saved my frames over the years, especially with the rock gardens in the lakes.
