I've had my EP801 powered Polygon Collosus n8e for four months now and have ridden everything from flat xc trails, black diamond rocky/rooty hills, and man made jump lines. Short bike review, it's awesome. Very stable on the down hills, playfully maneuverable in the twisties, maintains traction while climbing without looping out, and suspension action doesn't seem to be affected by braking. It only takes 16 bearings or something like that to achieve this feeling 😂.

On the EP801, I gotta be honest, I didn't really review Shimano or any ebike motors before I bought this bike. I was going to get a Yamaha Moro 07, but bikes online had this bike with better components listed more than $1,000 cheaper than the Moro. I like Shimano and Fox because I've had better luck with them than rockshox and avid, I've had 3 different avid brakes fail on me. 2 locked up, one rental bike lost the front brake on a California downhill run and I cartwheeled over a berm, so fuck that company. Anyway I didn't read the horror stories about ep8's until I had already assembled and ridden my bike. I was nervous, but as a former automotive, motorcycle, and bicycle mechanic I know a lot of bad stories you don't get the full version. Many people do "everything" according to the book and have no idea how it happened. So I take most of the stuff I read online and figure 1/4 of it is actually due to defect, 1/4 bad luck, and half because people are dumb.

I tried to keep an open mind and rode my bike. I was surprised at how quiet it is. I figured it would be more like an electric drill, but it's very quiet when pedaling and silent when coasting. There is zero of the rattle you hear people talk about. I figure if it starts rattling, I'll take it apart and see what broke, but so far so good! The next thing is the power, I've ridden it with the 7 fine tuning modes as well as the 3 standard modes. I bought the bike for a fun way to stay in shape, and I like the dynamic trail mode for this. It starts out slowly, but if you pedal hard or start uphill there's a definite uptick in power. It's very smooth and I don't have issues with tire spin on climbs or a light switch on/off feeling. I spin up fast and hard and this motor seems to like that style of pedaling.

I tried staying out of boost because it is supposed to be a workout for me, but I finally gave in and rode a loop on boost the whole time. It's immediately strong, and keeps that noticable assist feeling the whole time your pedaling. In trail you feel it starting out, and when you pedal hard or get to a hill, but not all the time. In trail mode my average speed is similar to my acoustic bike with an ability to climb easier. On boost I was averaging 5-8mph faster on flats and uphill. I could have gone faster if I had shifted up more, but my gotta show up to work tomorrow limiter kicked in around 17mph. Some claim this motor is weak or slow, but I have no idea what they're talking about. It's so much assistance I didn't feel like I was getting a real workout in. You can relax and take more breaks by letting the motor do the work. So even though it was fun I still ride in trail most of the time.

Overall I'm happy with it, the 630wh battery is plenty big for my local trails. The battery life indicator doesn't do anything weird, the app is easy to use and connects every time, and the motor is great. It's quiet, powerful, and I like the way power is delivered. I will update this if any issues arise, but so far I would recommend the ep801 to anyone looking for an ebike.

I agree with you, one of the good engines, which gives power and a feeling of natural pedaling, the previous model was sensitive to water, for the 801 I have no knowledge yet.

Thank you for your review, my first DU-E8000 reached 23,430km ODO +37,000km real before making weird noises. Good to read a good experience with SHIMANO Steps 😊

“and half because people are dumb.”
Best thing I read all day
DUE8000 for me the best Shimano Steps motor until I see these ODO km overcome with EP801

Main complaints about shimano motors is that shimano do not offer spare parts for any model, like bosch do or others. Ebike/motor service centers usually don't repair shimano motors bc of that. There are some mechanics that do repair them but they can't fix all cases cause usually they rely on parts that were recovered from other broken motors...

Overall I also find that my ep8 is greate motor, I only rode 1200km so it is barely breaked in but what some mechnic told me, if you keep water out of it it will last long. And try to keep cadence higher than 70 rpm ;]

@timo2824 I just read your post again and although I have already replied once, I need to add this:

You wrote "There is zero of the rattle you hear people talk about. I figure if it starts rattling, I'll take it apart and see what broke, but so far so good!"

The rattle that people talk about is a feature of the motor (one-way clutch I believe) that allows the reduced internal friction. Although it is disliked by some riders, it is not a fault as such and Shimano will tell you that. However, some people are sensitive to it and hear it all the time, or maybe they are just unlucky. I am one of the lucky ones and hardly hear it at all. When I first got the bike, I listened out for the rattle when coasting over rough ground and I could just about hear it. I decided to ignore it. I have just passed 2800 miles and I still don't hear it. Although a slight whirring noise is slowly getting louder!

It is not a fault, no need to dismantle the motor.

Only someone from a dry country like Israel or one of the drier regions in the USA could say "keep it out of the water". :ROFLMAO:
In the UK that would mean no riding from October to May.
No rain problem The problem of getting into water at engine level, full immersion and avoiding water pressure cleaning

I have done only 100km`s on my new bike and EP801 and I like it. There`s enough power and I like how it`s delivered. I have ridden basically only with trail mode and just tested the boost. Really close to Levo, just little bit different. Levo was noticable more efficient but it doesn`t matter. I did 3400km`s on Levo before motor was replaced and my commuter is now second time in LBS in three years and 11000km`s because Bosch gen4 is broken again. So if Shimano works three years and over 3400km`s without problems, I`m happy :D
And there`s no rattle or then I just don`t hear it.

My experience with a new ep801 (2024 Marin Alpine Trail E2) has been good so far, only 160ish km on it.
Noticed this small rattle just after 150km, but not that obnoxious on the trails, guess it depends on your suspension/tyres/ cushcore vs no cushcore etc

From what I understand this could be from the one-way clutch, which is basically normal for its engagement

600km on my EP600. I have never heard the rattle. Maybe I'm just not listening for it.

Love the motor. But can't wait for it to break, so I can upgrade to the EP801. :ROFLMAO: I want the new features in the 4.3 firmware upgrade. I want the extra 100 watts of power.

That said. I am so meticulous with maintenance and cleaning, it will probably never break. I always remove the cranks and spider every 100km and keep the seals spotless and free of dirt and water. I also remove the electrics cover and clean, spray water dispersant, then wipe thoroughly. I just can't help myself ...... :ROFLMAO:

Bearings can be replaced, which is most of the need for preventive treatment, grease replacement and all this can be bought on the open market.

11 months and no issues so far other than my old bones 3 bike rack. It has the two arms that stick out and I was using the old adapter from my other mountain bike, but it would pull the wires outta the display. I never really liked the plastic arms on it anyway so I got a motorcycle carrier that works great!

So I've been riding quite a bit the last month, my kids getting into riding! Anyway some quick notes after a year with the 801:

Only 500 miles ridden, I had double carpal tunnel and cupital release surgeries in Sept/Oct because my hands kept going numb. So I wasn't riding as much as I wanted to, but it's way better now!

630wh 2nd gen battery: I haven't noticed any decrease in range over the year. On a full charge I can get around 24-26 miles in trail mode. I don't really ever ride in eco or boost, so I have no idea what those modes would do for range.

Rattle: My bike doesn't have a rattle while I'm riding, but now that it's loosened up I can replicate it on a stand. It's the one way clutch engagement, so perfectly normal. I believe the collosus doesn't have the rattle while coasting because of the 6 bar linkage.

EP6 display: Works great, easy to see in sunlight, multiple views, I like the one that shows my cadence. Only gripe is that it scratches easily.

EP6 assist switch: Works great, what else could you ask a switch to do? 😂

ETube App: works fine, I wish it could do everything the computer version could do though. I mean it's 2024 Shimano, make a USB-C connection to the motor if it has to be hard wired.

Overall user experience with this system has been very positive. I'd recommend ito anyone without hesitation. Power is great, it's actually very quiet (in this bike frame anyway), and I really appreciate the dynamic trail mode. Has enough assistance to make riding enjoyable, while still making you work enough to get a decent workout.

I have to say, riding a Shimano motor now for around 4 months and I really need to stop reading the horror stories!

First, I read about batteries falling out on Merida eOne-Sixty models - so I have put a strap on to prevent that, despite the fact that I never had any issues anyway.

Next I read about the rattles - that made me start listening for them. Minor, but there. On singletrack, I get more noise from my helmet creaking and tyres humming than I do from the motor rattling.
Then I started getting worried when I hit larger jumps as I was getting a loud "clunk" as I landed (usually on a huck to flat or similar rough landing). Found out that it was actually my waterbottle flapping about in it's plastic cage and when that was eliminated, no more clunking.

Moral of the story - just ride the bloody thing and enjoy it. Don't overthink it.

I completely agree with OP on the review - great power, great control, OK app, decent battery and overall very happy.
I have the EP6, which is basically the EP801 with Alloy casing rather than magnesium (and doesn't get overrun, but I don't know what that feels like anyway, so I am not missing out).
Oh yeah - and my one was set to give assistance up to 45kmh right out of the shop, so I get more bang for my buck, so to speak...

If the battery is falling out the mount isn't set correctly, I watched a few of those as well! I didn't have to adjust mine, but I did have the top mounting bolts back out a bit and I couldn't get the battery in at a trailhead. Messed with it for a bit before I looked up into the frame and saw the loose bolts 😂.
