EMTB clipless shoes

Hey guys!

I'm looking for a new set of "enduro" shoes.
Currently I use Shimano SH-AM503 which are super comfy but the "flat" sole is sometime useless in woods / on trails where I need to push bike a bit through roots, clay or mud.

Do you have any recommendation for nice set of not-so-expensive shoes that would have nice solid thread and still be usable on Mallet-E pedals.

Any recommendation would be much appreciated

I can only recommend Crankbrothers own Mallet shoe.
It can be found in German online stores for around a hundred euros.

I have a pair of Shimano ME7 shoes, it's the second set I have had, and I had the older M200 before that. They are a great shoe with good grip off the bike, the ratchet closure is great and quick and easy to use and since changing from the M200 to the ME7 the sole is a lot more durable.

Yes, the Michelin sole fixed the issues with the old M200 shoe.

Another +1 for ME7's. A friend has ME502's which are a bit more trail XC and have good reviews

Another happy ME7 user here (With Time Atacs). But needed to size up to get a decent fit.
In Winter switch to Specialized Defrosters.

I like the look of the ME7. I like the fold over flap holding the laces. I have been looking for the flat pedal equivalent with the same features, but can't find it. All sorts of Shimano flats, but not an ME7 lookey-likey. Anyone out there got one? Link please.

BITD shimano winter boots has screw in studs at the front. I havent ridden spd for years and couldnt say if this is still a thing.
But back then they were fantastic for getting grip pushing up muddy slopes.

I'm getting a Trek 5200 this week and it has Look A5.1 clipless pedals on it.

I'm a total newbie when it comes to clipless and don't know where to start. I've been riding a Giant OCR2 and it isn't clipless.

What kind of setup should I get? Do I just need the shoe or is there another component that attaches to the shoe and clips to the pedal? How much should I plan to spend on something that will last? Can you wear the shoes when you get off the bike? Questions, questions.... Thanks!

BTW, I ride 100-150 mpw with very little stop and go traffic.

Easiest option - Change the pedals to flats

For me when I tried clipless I just didnt get on with it at all

I know use Magpeds which is a hybid of both

If you want to go clipless, you just need a pair of clipless shoes, just make sure to get the correct cleats as shimano and crankbrothers for example are different

Look are a road specific clipless system. You need a cleat, which attaches to the bottom of the shoe and clips into the pedal. These come with new pedals, but are available separately (although it’s often cheaper just to buy new pedals too).

Clipless shoes come in varying degrees of comfort and stiffness, so ability to walk depends on which shoe you buy. Like all things roadie, road specific shoes seem designed to maximise the pain in exchange for marginal gains.

I've not encountered Look clipless pedals before ..but to answer your first question if these are already fitted to the bike then the shop will have the required cleats ( assuming it's a new bike ) .
If you are used to flats then swap them off your old bike if you want a smooth transition ..
" Clipless" take a good bit of getting used to ..I've been using Time Atac for the best part of 30 years but can vividly remember my first ride and the main problem being forgetting to unclip when coming to a stop & falling sideways attached to the bike ..
As mentioned I've never tried Look pedals but they do look a lot like Shimano ..and will be very rigid once clipped in ...
The Time pedals give a lot more " float" ..and are a lot easier to clip in and out of ..as well as being wider ..
Another upside is that your shins will no longer look like a well used dart board from the occaisional pedal strike using flats ..
Good luck with your choice..once you've mastered clips there is no going back ..
