is there a problem with using a bell or a beep beep horn on a bike to warn slow walkers that ur approaching them .

I find my voice more than enough to warn people of my presence.

I'm not the sort of total dick who rides a trail yelling at people to get out my way though.

Completely agree; the last thing you want is a hideously noisy electric horn to scare people out of the way. Use your voice or get something like this which is a far less obnoxious solution...

Louder freehub is enough most of the time. Or a cough or a hello to the other humans I share the trail with.

If someone on a mtb trail were honking a horn at me I would get wide shoulders.....very very wide shoulders!! This is about the most impolite I have heard in a long time.

A friendly “hello” or “passing you on your left/right side” is the way to go. If people in front of me are struggling I gladly stay behind and wait until it is possible to overtake.

lol sorry but these days walkers on our trails , there is millions of walking trails and a handfull for mtb tracks, so without sounding like a prick , i dont want to be yelling at anyone , just want to give them a small and short beep , plus i wear full face

Come on fella...courtesy first....if there are walkers on the trail you cannot go fast. Honking a horn and/or using a horn is the best way to get you and others a bad rep and possibly banned. Cannot see either why a full face is needed if the trail is one shared with walkers.

the trails im talking about are MTB only trails but more and more walkers use them , that doesnt worry me as much as me smashing into them at 40 kph , i wear a full face helmet because i do more then ride fire trails at leisurely pace

No one has mentioned walkers/joggers/runners having their headphones up to max volume so even a bicycle bell won’t get them out of the way. You have to crawl behind them hoping they give you enough room to overtake, which can take ages.

How do you solve this problem? Air horn?

Ok I figured something out. Use NFC to interrupt their music, then a radio frequency burst.

That’s going to be less and less common with the world population steadily going up, with people changing their lifestyles to protect their health and the environment, etc.

If my solution is a tunnel through a mountain, yours is building a road around it. I know which one I would choose.

I've got one of the Timber bells mounted between the right grip and brake lever (above the bar, but tilted down). Easy to switch on and off with my thumb and loud enough to warn walkers (without headphones!) that i'm coming through.

Out of curiosity, I followed a guy a few weeks back on an electric monowheel ? On a sandy track he averaged about 25kph and on an incline he maintained the same speed.

When he came across some walkers he reached to his chest and pressed something, I've no idea what, but it made a duck quack sound "quack quack" .. which didn't seem to annoy them, but did get their attention. Similarly you could modify your dropper post pressure release valve to make a whoopee cushion sound .. which may just make people sorry for your discomfort rather than irritate them and they'd certainly give you a wide berth.

I have been complimented on my old fashioned "ding" type bell and once even " thank you for ringing your bell!!!!" BUT its not much use against full on ear buds....patience usually pays off.
Bloody uncontrolled dogs are another story.
I do live in sleepy Suffolk though .

Use of a bell on paths is ok, but on the trail it is not ok. Where I live it is a legal requirement to have a bell fitted, and we are allowed to ride on paths.

A mtb full face helmet impares your hearing and line of sight and makes many wearers oblivious to other trail users behind or to the side of them but ironically doesn't really affect how loudly the wearer can be heard saying "excuse me" and "thank you"

Generally most people on trails are ok , but Towpath is a frigging nightmare , they wander around blocking the whole thing , fisherman are twats and don’t get me started on dog owners especially those ones with the extendable leads

Such angst! Chill! I love seeing people out enjoying the fresh air and getting some exercise. This thread is beginning to have signs of MTB rage. Towpaths and bridleways are just tthe means to get to mtb territory....find a mountain or deep forest....no one there!!

Lol , I was joking after the angst of earlier posts , I just ride along laughing at the bike rage of some , but dog walkers are a very ignorant bunch in general ?

Don't come across dogs on the trail too often, but I'm extra wary of the ones on the long retractable leashes (which you sometimes can't see until it's too late) - they make a awful noise if you run over the lead...

Here in Switzerland, they expect you to have a bell mounted on trails open to both walkers and cyclists, which is most of them.

People are generally respectful and polite to each other here. If you ring the bell, they know it's a bike coming and get out of the way.

I think you'd be better off with a bell as its cheery demeanour isn't aggressive. A horn on the other hand is a bit dickish in my view. People are walking in the hills partly to get away from traffic sounds.

Dog walkers on the other hand, it annoys me like hell when they don't pick up after them and I have to wash the dog shit out of my clothes, hair and teeth after riding a trail.
