Well I've had fun trying to get the steel ring out so I can replace the bearings!
Just put the tool in the vice, slot the wheel onto it and turn anticlockwise is the internet method.
Not an F ING chance of me getting enough purchase on the wheel too undo it.
So I resorted to plan B and got the proper equipment out 😁
All done now, but I thought it might be easier to just fit a new hub🤔

@Bear-uk The sight of that massive lever made me laugh! :ROFLMAO: Well done!

But I know what the problem was.

That mucky dork ring!
Get rid of it, look at all the muck it has collected.
I know it looks shit but you don't notice it much with the cassette on.
It's staying on at the moment though!

The dork ring as mentioned is very dirty and everything surrounding it is too. why didn't you clean everything on wheel/tyre before you started job?(n)
There's no point doing a job like that where bearings are involved if a bit of grit/dirt can get in as you put it back together.

Bearings are sealed on both sides and it's not loose dirt it's four years of grime that's ingrained in.
Thanks for your concern though. You'd have thought after 35 year's in the motor trade I would have learned how to change a couple of wheel bearings 🤔

I try to break my santa cruz reserve wheel every few years to get a warranty replacement rather than have to do this. 😬

I'm doing a clutch on my daughter's s**tbox 20 year old Toyota Yaris next weekend & I reckon it won't be that dirty! Gotta love mountain bikes.

You had better make it sparkling clean or the OCD police will be whinging!

A very good suspension tech once told me 90% of his work was cleaning. I believe him.

Don't know why people would get out of shape over dirty MTB's, they're supposed to be blasted through the dirt. You do see bikes in here that look like garage queens that have never seen a trail, I wonder about those.

I totally agree with suspension. When I service my forks they end up being mega clean 👍

None of my bikes are clean, no point in them being shiney nor have I washed my car since I bought it in November as I can't be arsed but thanks for diagnosing my OCD. I might just have ADHD, you never know...
I will clean the crap off my bike before dismantling such things as BB, headset, suspension, hub bearings or removing the freehub. Having repaired all my cars for the last 50 years taught me from the beginning to take care and part of that is cleaning the shit off around where I'm going to work on car. Works for me.

Oh Yea...... Been there and done that.

I ripped my vice and work bench from the wall of my garage trying to get the drive ring off of a 350 hub. I found that loosening the drive ring helps with a bit of heat from a blow dryer, the help of friends and a few beers.

Good job!

Yes I had the electric paint stripper heat gun on it and it made no difference ☹️
