Will bikes purchased from German online retailers be covered in the UK for warranty issues and would you be able to use your brand of choice retailer in the UK for such warranty claims and repairs?

You'll have to check with the manufacturer to be sure. I'd also have a word with your LBS. The default is your warranty is with the retailer you bought it from, i.e. the German shop. Some manufacturers run International warranty schemes though.

If I had not bought my last bike from my local shop, it would still be lying in my garage unused while I tried to get support from the manufacturer to fix problems and supply parts......

Just to put the other side of this and take the opportunity to praise Bikester. I bought an Orbea Wild FS H20 about 3 weeks ago for significantly less than I could have bought it "locally". £3,950 as opposed to £5,300 and beyond. It was delivered within 10 days from Germany. After a couple of days I noticed that the dropper post was not functioning correctly so I took it into my LBS for repair. They changed the cable which had somehow become twisted in the sleeve and charged me £65. I contacted Bikester and they refunded the £65 immediately.

Sounds like decent service from Bikester, and a great deal on the bike. My concern would be turning up at an LBS with a cracked frame, blown rear shock or broken motor though.

It will depend entirely on the brand of bike you buy as to whether their UK dealers will handle any warranty issues - You'll need to read the small print in the bike warranty Terms & conditions.

The statutory legal minimum (ie regardless of what is written in the warranty T&C's ) is that the shop you bought it from is legally responsible for sorting any issues, however most brands have a warranty that goes over and above this and states that any of their dealers (in europe at least - some give worldwide coverage) will handle warranty issues, but you need to ensure that this really is the case with whatever bike you buy.

I bought from bikester.co.uk (similar deal to joe blow above) - the warranty from the brand I bought states that any of their dealers will fix warranty issues - so I'm hopeful that I can sort any issues out without having to go back to bikester in germany. So far no issues though.....


My normal bike is a YT capra, the carbon fibre cranks on this failed after nearly 2 years (2 years warranty) , rather than contact YT for resolution I sent an email to the UK distributor of the brand of the cranks, they asked me to send the cranks back to them along with proof of purchase of the bike from YT , they inspected them and then sent me a brand new set of cranks, all sorted within a week with no fuss.

I don't disagree with you but that's £1300 plus for piece of mind and in any case Bikester do have a UK presence. Not to mention that I could not get a bike of any brand in my size in any shop this side of Christmas. I had already short listed Orbea so when I saw it at that price and available in my size I didn't hesitate. I suppose time will tell if I live to regret my decision but up till now I'm happy and more importantly out riding which I would not have been otherwise.

Bike-discount has a great service and is way cheaper( atleast 25% less)
then all the local stores and webshops in belgium. Not sure on warranty thing.

I've purchased parts from both these companies in the past and had no issues, however for info Bike24 don't dispatch bikes to the UK and BD charge 58.90 € delivery.

I spoke to Jungle who are the Santa Cruz uk dealer about these bikes. Given how cheap they were on bikediscount I wanted to see what was going on. Jungle confirmed that they were legit bikes and would come with full Santa Cruz lifetime warranty on frame. Wheels and bearings but you would probably have to go through bike discount to sort any major warranty issues out. so other than the hassle of it Possibly having to go to Germany no different to anywhere else.

of note pedal and spoke bike shop in the uk has got a load of hecklers on the way. They said in one post on Instagram would match online prices and would give free upgrade to the EP8 when it came out. Might be worth a call to them to see what price they will do one. I would be surprised if they match the prices though as they are crazy cheap on bike discount at the moment
