• Warning!!

Riding a tuned or deristricted EMTB is not a trivial offence and can have serious legal consequences. Also, many manufacturers can detect the use of a tuning device or deristricting method and may decline a repair under warranty if it was modified from the intended original specification. Deristricting EMTB's can also add increased loads for motors and batteries. Riding above the local law limit may reclassify the bike as a low-powered bike, requiring insurance, registration and a number plate.

Be aware of your local country laws. Many laws prohibit use of modified EMTB's. It is your responsibility to check local laws. Ignoring it, has potential implications to trail access, and risk of prosecution in the event of an accident.

Bosch Smart System Derestrict - Long-term Success?

Hi everyone,

I've got a Bosch Performance Line CX (with Smart System) with drive unit software version 12.13.0 (have not updated since purchasing the bike). I installed a SpeedBox 1.1 a couple of weeks ago and had a 524001 Speed Manipulation Detected error after ~100kms. I was unable to clear it by riding for 90+ mins, so resorted to having a sympathetic dealer clear the error for me. Here are the exact details of the rides I did between fitting the SpeedBox 1.1, and the error occurring:
Journey 1 = 18mls, mix of eMTB and Turbo, generally riding at 35km/h
Journey 2 = 18mls, Turbo, generally riding at 35km/h
Journey 3 = 18mls, Turbo, generally riding at 35km/h
Journey 4 = 18mls, Turbo, generally riding at 35km/h
Journey 5 = Error occurred after 0.1mile
As you can see I set the max speed at 35km/h as per SpeedBox advice. On each occasion I let the countdown timer run at the end of the ride. Before I reinstall the SpeedBox 1.1, I want to see if there are other riders with a Bosch Smart System, with the same software version and the same SpeedBox product (or a different tuning device) that have successfully avoided an error for longer than me. If so, I'd be interested in what steps you are taking, or how your rides vary from mine.

Thanks!

My gen3 Rail has run from new derestricted with a speed box and always in turbo so I bought a new Rail with the smart system last year, same issues as you. Local bosch service centre seeing nothing but issues too. I took the hit and sold the bike and upgraded the old one. Won’t be buying another bosch, the smart one was my fourth. Dunno what next one will be

Do you mind if I ask a few more details...
What max speed did you set? How many miles did you do before you got the error? Were you mainly riding in Turbo mode? Did you have GPS switched off on your phone? (Just trying to build up a picture of how the smart system might be detecting the tuning device).

Tried max speed at several levels, always in turbo. Had app connected after first time then removed and deleted it after for the following attempts. The shop I used reset it 4 times, over a month they had all the chips they’d sold come back. Seems an update at the time had done this, shop also suspected the app is used for speed detection too. As I said this was my fourth bosch powered bike but I’m done with them now.

the service loaded the engine software for the American market and now I have a power steering limit of 32km/h, which isn't much, but it drives much better.
