You all got me pretty worried about failure. Rubbish to think you get 2 years + <1000 miles before you essentially have a boat anchor. And pray you can even buy the replacement motor or you really do have an anchor.

I foresee a near future where bike mechanics will become e-bike motor repair mechanics as well. accessory manufacturers will shell out upgraded drive internals, light weight strong alternatives guaranteed to make a kid run faster, jump higher…

Just how hard is it to tear one of these drive units down? I’m totally down to do say a 500 mile service or something to potentially have the bike actually be rideable for more than a few years

Well, on the bright side Specialized offered 50% discount on a replacement motor for a non-warranty failure. Not sure if this is new policy or how long they will offer that, but that's what was offered for mine. Made it too cheap to pass up. I'll open up the old motor and see what the damage is and what it would take to repair.

They may want the old motor back

There're already places that either repair Ebike motors and/or sell replacement parts so you can do it yourself. The motors don't have to be boat anchors after the warrantee ends.

You’re right, and really the motor repair only looks slightly more complex than a fork rebuild. I suppose I don’t mind that much, just surprised that they fail so quickly with such a short warranty.

Designed to have a foot or two, when the motor starts to fail it goes up to 4 to 6 feet, mine is currently doing this about half the time, the intermittent frequency is also and indicator, so far Specialized has declined motor replacement, they want it non functioning, they however have been fantastic about warranty.

Warm Regards Ruti
