If it was a Bosch motor that journey would require 38 no. replacement motors to complete!

(Based on my current experience with Bosch)

Most definitely a Specialized motor that accomplished this journey because if by any chance the motor failed he would have gotten a new motor the next day.
No other brands are even close to Specialized warranty and customer service.

It could be one motor. There's a vast difference between fast commuter miles and hard mtb miles. My motor at 3000km 11 months is starting to give me issued. I'm not surprised to be honest I'm riding in the mud and grime and constantly hammering up and down mountains, towing my boy up hills. It's not an easy service life.

That guy's bike was obviously a 2003 Santa Cruz Bullit with a Bafang BBSHD mounted.

But seriously motors like that BBSHD are pretty hardcore in terms of durability and simplicity. I rode this one for 3 years in real trail use and no babying and no issues. I felt guilty, so after 2 years I cracked it open to grease the drive gears. They still had grease on them, and the motor was quiet. Put fresh grease in and kept riding. I only semi-retired it when I got a Trek Rail 7 this year. There are motors out there that can go an extreme distance with little attention.
