As some one who has drag raced, you cannot apply this analogy, because in drag racing it’s all about weight transfer and getting the tyre to grip radially, sidewall flex adds a nice buffer for these loads but not sideways loads, So now if you take that exact same tire (and pressure) at the end...

22 and 26 here, double down side walls, 105kg dh/enduro riding. Any less and you can get the tyres to wallow in a hard turn.

How desperately do I need to replace this seal? Is the rubber part just a weather flap or is it part of the main sealing mechanism itself?

Yes, you could use a shoulder washer or a shoulder screw, IMO even just a normal screw with a penny washer would hold, but I’d want the 3rd screw in place for peace of mind.

Dave_B my bike does not have the additional plate, and an earlier post indicated that it would be removed. I can’t be certain of the compatibility if wanting to retain the plate.

This channel does all of the heavy lifting as far as mounting the cover goes, the top and bottom battery mounts prevent it from sliding in its channel. It’s not a perfect fit so if left open there is a chance of a rattle, but I’m not convinced it would rattle given the direction of the travel...
