It's not always possible to tell between a belt failure and clutch bearing failure, but you do often get some clues. If you pedal and there is a whirring sound, the drive belt is still intact but has stripped its teeth off. During this scenario, the bike may even feel like it's still assisting...
Very well said Rob and very brave. There is also one other issue that is happening more and more now and that is the reparability of these motors is also being restricted. Yamaha have just upgraded the software in all their motors to stop PCB changes, they have also soldered down the PCB in...
Our tip would be to leave this part well alone! It took us 18 months and the manufacture of a very expensive tool to finally be able to remove and repair the planetary gears. We have given this knowledge and tooling to most of our partners, including our man in the USA. If you get any issues you...
This time three weeks ago we could have just given you a new PCB and off you would have gone, happy... So sad!
Most Yamaha motors have the same bolt hole alignment (apart from PW-X) but the wiring can exit from different angles from the top of the motor and this can foul on the frame some...
The motor can do a similar thing if it over heats. But, your pcb heat pads look good in your photographs and the issue does not seem to appear specifically during a climb, so I don't think it is actually overheating. However, the sensor on the PCB maybe telling the software, that the motor is...
I have seen your e-mail and your PM. Sorry, but I struggle to answer messages over the weekends these days... need the rest at my age
I was interested to watch your video (Day 3). When your motor stopped assisting, I could hear that it was still running, but had gone into "limp" mode...
Some are, some not so much! There was definitely a big swing away from serviceability, but the EU sustainability laws seem to be bringing this back a little bit. Electronics and software are the big issue. A lot of our work is keeping people going by any means. If their motor is destroyed or...
Normally when I don't post information, I usually put a good explanation. I have, many times explained why I won't post this particular information. Added to that, the detailed information I have, is 95% from the UK. To correlate this info across different threads or even forums, with people...
I am sorry PeGaZ, as I have stated several times throughout this thread. I cannot recommend a grease for this motor. Shimano do use a couple of different greases throughout the motor and no one currently knows what these greases are? If I say one on here that does not work for the rest of the...
Hang in there guys. Please don't forget that we can service and repair many of these motors worldwide. We have the parts, tools and knowledge... plus we are working very hard to find upgrades and sealing solutions. With service partners now in 36 countries so far (these are not all shown on our...
Please think carefully before putting a different grease in or on your motor.
Many greases might look good for electric motors, but an ebike motor is not technically an electric motor! It has an electric motor inside it, but the thing itself is mostly gears and electronics. This is when a much...
Good job, and 10 x cheaper than our Snap-On ones  Can't help but mention, I was always taught that aluminium embodied into a grinding wheel is extremely dangerous because it expands faster than the wheel and can also overheat the wheel causing it to shatter! Maybe worth getting a dressing...
Bosch Gen 3 does not have seals, only a plastic cover on the drive side was fitted to the later ones. Pic below
If you are riding off road in wet or muddy conditions, I would strongly recommend removing the "seals" cleaning and re-greasing every 2 to 3 months. Remember, these are not seals...
Thanks for the shout out for Cycle Chrome, those guys have put a lot of effort into learning about eBike motors, including flying over to the UK to spend a few days training with us. As for your water ingress, I think what you perceive to be water is oil. This is a very light clear oil that...
You have done exactly what we do by replacing the bolts so good job there. The other thing we do is remove the motor and clean all traces of grease from the frame and motor covers, this allows the motor and frame to "bite" together. If grease is or has been used, the motor will keep moving and...
11,000Km is nothing for these bearings, they are the same bearings that are used in cars and motorcycles for hundreds of thousands of miles. If water has not made it's way too far into the motor half your bearings may be fine and this will half your bill! It's normally worth a look first.
You can ask Heikki at SMHJ to just repair the fault. Your motor probably does not require a full overhaul. As one of our partners, I will ask why he is only giving a 3 month guarantee too (y)
