@Doug Stampfer yes those little bolts were loose on my battery when new! Noticed this weekend some had worked loose again, definitely time for some loctite. I also followed the official alignment procedure when new, but my battery is now rattling again and has a lot more movement. @markloch 's...
The lock being centered in the hole is only part of it...if your battery is that hard to remove, I would say that is due to misalignment...have you had a go at the alignment procedure ? Prevention is better than cure....you don't want to drop your battery ?
There is a picture of the alignment plate in the 2021 Rail manual update as posted here New Trek Rail 2020-2021 Service Manual Supplement - EMTB Forums
On the test ride you mention, the battery would have fallen out due to misalignment. When putting the battery in, it is impossible to remove...
@MadWes I can confirm the Wolftooth Goat Link will do the job perfectly. I made this exact mod on my accoustic bike, worked beautifully. I think Wolftooth sell longer b-screws as well, but you probably won't need one, I didn't
@BIG RED AL congrats on your purchase! You won't regret it one bit...I would have bought the Whyte (prefer the 29er version)... but ease of battery removal was a huge plus for me and swung me towards the Rail. Rails also tend to be a bit cheaper down under although very good spec on the RS Whyte ?
@Dr. Ergal sorry to hear about the demise of your original lock ring nut, but you have devised a rather clever solution. I will be interested to see how it all works out going forward. Luckily it was just the nut that got damaged
What sort of tyres are you running ? You might find you can do without the rim protector by running a tyre with a stronger sidewall, like Maxxis DoubleDown. I've had excellent results running those tyres, set up tubeless and low-ish pressures as well. The tyres just offer heaps of support, no...
I'm 99% certain that Shimano tool is the one. I got this one for an after-market screw-fit BB to replace the hideous $20 press fit BB my Trek Remedy had. It also fits the Bosch lockring and looks the same as the Shimano tool

I think you'd find a DT Swiss star ratchet free hub much easier to live with! Stronger and doesn't need constant servicing like the Bonty hubs, and the parts are too big to lose ? no fiddly pawls & springs
I agree that the Whyte handles beautifully and does indeed feel light on the trail, also very stable and planted due to the weight nicely centered and low. I've never owned one but I hired one for the day at a bike park and I've never forgotten the experience, it's what got me sold on emtb ...
This is my 5 cent's worth. The Whyte and the Rail both use the Bosch motor, which in my opinion is still the best. The Whyte is an awesome bike and extremely good value for money. I would buy the Whyte as long as you don't want to remove the battery for ease of charging etc . The battery is a...
Everyone has their own preference for tyres, you really have to try a few and see what works best for the terrain you ride. I run Maxxis Assegai front and either Maxxis Dissector or Aggressor rear. Get the heavier Double Down casing, heaps of support even at lower pressures, assuming you're...
