As the title says, I’m wondering whether anybody has experience using an Onyx hub (or any other silent hub for that matter) on their ebike? I’m considering an Onyx - I was waiting for the new Shimano Scylence hubs but who knows when that will be...

Did you end up building a wheel with the Onyx hub?

Sorry I didn't see this post earlier. Yes, I'm reusing some Onyx classic hubs, now with about 1700 miles and about 100 vertical climbing (and descending) feet per mile on my 2018 Levo Carbon. I'd previously ridden the same hubs for 2 years on my Hightower.

Onyx recommends using their steel freehub driver (HG or XD), only available for their classic hub, not the newer much lighter Vesper rear hub. If buying new hubs the steel drive is lower cost.

I didn’t see this until too late and have the Onyx vesper. Has anyone had a vesper fail on their emtb?

Email [email protected] or call +1 (320) 295-7652 and ask them if OK. I think they still require the classic hubs for e-bikes, because of having a full double row of sprags in the sprg-clutch engagement. The Vesper has a lighter 1.5 width of the sprag-clutch. I imagine the Vesper warranty would apply on an e-bike, but a failure could be a long heavy non-assisted pedal back to a trail head, plus the downtime to get fixed with a couple months wait for a new hub replacement.

My Onyx Classics are now trouble-free for 3 years and over 5,k miles on my Levo with lots of climbing almost every ride, after 2 years frequent use before on my Hightower.
