I always fancied trying them but I have never found a pair that look as if they would go over my shimano boots.

Interesting video just released from Ryan F9 about Gor-tex. Worth a watch.

It was always said they are good for about 7 washes. If its a new jacket you see the water beading not for long though. Some swear reproofing works I've never had much luck with that.

I bought Goretex boots... a famous brand which I will spare the embarassment here..............and walking across a pasture ( wet grass) when it was also raining the boots were anything but waterproof. So I sent them back. The reply I got was that I had failed to properly treat the uppers.....suede.....which was rubbish because I have sprayed them regularly. They also quoted ( a now forgotten) force of water that goretex would not stop. So in summary, they told me the action of walking through wet grass was too high a water pressure for goretex to resist and in any case the majority of waterproofing was a chieved by treating the upper with a water repellant. I will admit that I have bought Goretex boots since then and found them to be waterproof but those were 2 specific brands....ECCO and Saloman. The difference with both was I think 2 things. Firstly the uppers were "up" to the job of keeping water at bay ( ECCOs were thick leather/Salomans were a non airtex type man made material).......and they both appeared to know how to properly line the shoe with minimal seams. I would not pay a premium for Goretex. As the video says........

I have shimano boots, the enduravone off wiggle fully open up for easy fit
Its the Xm9 leather ones I have a couple of pair. They take spd but I don't use that . Good boots but they have small breathing holes in the side so never going to be fully waterproof. Must be 15 year old the first pair I got. Leatt obes arriving today so we will see.

Just arrived ordered Sunday night. Sale must have stopped as discount marked on my invoice of 80 quid , and the link I got from Tubby G now showing £189 . Perfect fit im always a 8 but this is 8.5. There is a bit of toe room but snug fit so I think an 8 would have been too tight .

Width is ok I would say snug zipping up but they will stretch a wee bit . Probably put plastic bags on them so they stay clean for the first few rides .

I use madison neoprene overshoes if it's really messy. Cheap as chips (think the pair I use now were £15) and do the job.

Ps if you after boots rather than wisdom they are called Salomon

What would you choose, the 5 10 trailcross or vaude am moab? Also on the other hand, how is it to have something like shimano mw7 on flat pedals?

Cant speak fro the Vaude or Moab as i dont think we get them in the UK, but the trailcross is excellent. the shimano would be terrible on flat peddals, why they dont make them with a proper sole is beyond me?

A couple of years ago I had a pair of Shimano MW5 sent away to have the sole swapped over for a pair of 5/10 dotty soles. There's a thread somewhere about it, but I think it ended up costing me about £230 overall.

It kind of worked - but the MW5 have a very firm sole for clips, so although I had the sticky dotty sole, it just felt a bit weird as it wasn't as flexible as a pair of 5/10's.
The other downside is that the MW5's were really poor at keeping water out considering thats what they were designed for. I'd often come home with soaking feet.

Thankfully 5/10 released the Goretex Trailcross boot a few months later, and my 'hybrid' MW5's haven't seen the light of day again since! I think they're in a box in my loft along with a pair of clipless Greg Minnar 5/10's that I don't use anymore since swapping to flats!

I recieved my Freerider EPS during the week and gave them a try today.

It was a dry day but we've had torrential rain for the past two weeks so the mud and slop was pretty bad.

I got the low top ones so paired them with a cheap set of gaiters to help keep the water out.

Looks really naff but pleased to say they did the job.

They kept my feet dry and warm for the entire ride which was around 4 hours. No rainfall just spray and mud splashes.
The grip is excellent.

When cleaning the bike I gave them a quick blast with my battery pressure washer, which is more akin to a weak hose pipe and a wipe over.
At this point they let water in but super easy to clean which I like.

I didn't wear waterproof socks as I wanted to see how well they stayed dry during the ride.
This was after blasting them with the washer. So more water resistant than water proof. I think coupled with water proof socks they will be good enough for the forseeable for me.

I do want to try and keep them in good condition, can anyone recommend a decent waterproof spray or wax I can use on them?

Same for me today....my 5-10 EPS are boots.....4 years old and still good as new. I had full immersion with one foot in a flooded section of trail today......up to just below ankle level.....no water ingress. I use Grangers G-Wax ( natural beeswax). Coat the tongue and laces when you use the wax and tighten the laces a cross the tongue when putting the boots/shoes on and you will prevent any water ingress. ( your laces are too loose!!)

What make are those gaiters?

Just cheap ones from ebay. Now I know they work I'll look into getting some better ones I think

Cheers Mike, I'll check out that wax (y) and sort my laces. I went up half a shoe size too and they only just fit with thick socks!

I tried the Leatt ones I got on Friday wet day as well. They were muddy so I dipped them in the loch to wash. Socks were wet so hopefully it was the loch wash. Grippy soles . Yes I have ankle gaiters That's the way even put the full length ones on occasionally.
