Which bottle cage Trek Rail

Why did Trek decide to put the screws so far up? They could have easily been an inch lower down the frame, and bottles would have fitted without issues!

I would actually prefer them being higher. That would allow more cages to be compatible with external canister shocks. Check if your setup has enough clearance. Canister bends rather far when linkage compresses. Only the SuperDeluxe RT which is standard in lower spec models stays far enough from water bottle area to allow 24oz/700ml bottles.

Never really thought about the shock hitting it when compressed. I only fitted it as an experiment, and it’s now back on my SJ.
I wouldn’t use that bottle anyway, as it’s bound to scrape the frame.

Some bottle cages have a longer notch to allow for macro adjustment of the cage position.

The Specialized one has about 1cm slot so you can slide it up and down. The photo above is it slid all the way down.

It moves about an inch (2-3cm's).

This is the Bontrager side loader with a 600ml bottle in a medium Trek Rail 9.8 frame.
Fits perfect.

Yea there is a notable difference in the front triangle space between large and medium.
Bot you can still fit in a 600ml bottle on a medium, with no touching on the frame.
You can also fit in a 750ml bottle but it will have to be flexed in, and the top of the bottle will touch the frame

And with a Camelbak Podium Dirt 21oz bottle;

The bottle neck touches the underside of the top tube and has to be forced into the cage.

Just noticed that on my medium the bottom of the water bottle has rubbed the paint off the oil reservoir on the shock, it must touch when the suspension compresses, bugger

Bugger indeed. There's not a lot of room on the Mediums.

Clearance for Fox DHX2 made it even more complicated. This setup works actually pretty well and there’s 5 mm clearence for shock cannister. Cage is Elite Cannibal XC and bottle is 550ml from Elite. View attachment 24450
I use the same setup as this, but I drilled a couple of new holes in the Elite cage about 10mm above the original holes. This drops the cage down the tube a bit and with standard shock give room for bottle without scuffing the frame.

My problem is the opposite.
The 9.8s shock has a small reservoir that sticks out a bit to the front and this hits the bottom of the bottle

I think on medium frame with piggyback shock you are limited to 450-500ml bottles. Fidlock 450ml could work as an option.

Managed to sort it, I just pushed my Trek bottle cage up about 5mm, and I've got an old SIS 600ml water bottle that now fits (just) ?

Zaykay, thanks for posting the photo with the DHX2 and the 550ml bottle. What size frame do you have? Thanks. I’m also interested in how the DHX2 feels compared to the Rock Shox Super with re:Aktif thru shaft.

Large frame and I like it a lot better. Plush and more traction.

Anyone on here riding a small Rail 7? Mine doesn't even have holes or screws for a waterbottle cage. Assuming that's because of the size????
