What displays are compatible with ep8 (du-ep800)?

Hi!

my orbea rise came with the ew-en100 only and I would like to add a display. I know the sc-em800 is the one to get, but it requires sd300 cables.

I have seen some builds with ep8 and e7000 display... and using sd50 cables. Could I just install this display? Any other option with ant/ble compatible?

The sc-e5003 also appears to be compatible, but it does not have ant/ble and it is sd300 compatible only... will it work together with the ew-en100?

Thanks!

I just looked at the STEPS compatibility chart from here: COMPATIBILITY | E-TUBE PROJECT | E-TUBE (shimano.com)
Direct link to current version (Oct 2020): HM-CC.4.0.2-00-EN.pdf (shimano.com)

Interestingly the EP8 motor (DU-EP800) is only listed in the section with E6000/5000 units!

This doesn't even indicate that the DU-EP800 is compatible with the EW-EN100 :) I guess it still needs some updating ...

One thing to note is you can't use a display and the EW-EN100 at the same time - it's always only one or the other. So can't use the sc-e5003 and EW-EN100 as you asked.

If you want to use the EP8 and E7000 display then I think you will need a new connector which converts between the 2 types of cable.

(Got that from this EP8 dealer manual: DM-EP800-01-ENG.pdf (shimano.com) )

Actually, if you are already connecting to the EW-EN100 then that must already have the cable conversion adapter somewhere - so I guess it should just work to replace the EW-EN100 with the SC-E7000 and keep your existing cables ...

Thank you! very useful answer! It is just what I thought.

As you say, there is an adapter already inside the bike, so to replace the ew-en100 I have to remove the adapter from inside the frame and replace the cable with a longer one (sd300).

I was trying to avoid just that xD

I like the minimalist design of the sc-e7000

thanks again!

One additional question... if I want to use the sc-em800... and I don't want to mess with the internals of the frame... can I use another adapter to revert the sd50 cable to sd300? It is a bit of overkill but I can live with that if it works

motor ep8 -> sd300 -> adapter -> sd50 -> adapter -> sd300 -> sc-em800?

Thanks!

My guess would be that it would work? Would give you the option to switch the cables over later if you decide to keep it permanently (or get your LBS to do it).

Thanks! It is a shame than the 5003 does not work with the ew-en100, that would have been my ideal upgrade, cheap and useful.

Wait a sec... the e7000 comes with sd50... would not that be a direct replacement of the ew-en100???
It comes with ant/ble and sd50 ports... is it that just what I need?!?!?

Yep the SC-E7000 should just be a direct swap with the EW-EN100 - although the cable of the assist mode switch may not be long enough to reach all the way to the display - the E7000 switches come in versions with different cable lengths. If it doesn't reach you could either buy the switch with the longer cable, or extend the cable with a different connector (SD50 cable to SD50 cable).

The SC-E7000 display is black and white I think compared to the SC-EM800 color display (but depends what you prefer). It looks like the SC-EM800 might also display slightly more information (like the % of assistance) - but again depends which you prefer :)

The e7000 is cheaper and smaller and I don't care about the color display, and can be used with my switch. The cable is long enough because it came with a very long cable. The only things I need are speed and remaining battery.

Now I only need to wait for a good price at ebay second hand or something similar :D

BTW I am using a cubot king kong mini with a custom 3d printed garmin support right now :D

Nice!

Nice setup, KuRi. I use a SP Connect phone mount. The etube app is pretty good, but is it not possible to switch mode from app? Seems odd not to be able to do that...

One idea I've had is to buy a longer SD-50 cable (for the mode switch) and tuck the junction box inside the frame. Would look pretty clean with AXS shifter/dropper.

@KuRi - Have you got any more details on that mount for the cubot? Looks like a great setup (though ideally a Wahoo version for me as I've got mounts on all of my bikes for my Elemnt!!).
