Sounds like the chain is skipping on the sprocket. Is your chain wear in spec? Is your b tension correct? Is your chain too long?

I adjusted the b screw and shortened the chain on mine.

Think of explaining that to a child who just about knows that a bike has two wheels and a chain!!

B tension is totally new to me, it’s a turbo Levo if that makes any difference.

Well I appreciate that but I’m more keen on learning than just getting someone to fix it for me.

The chain is the original chain, 600k on the bike, bike had a 6 week check up from new 2 weeks ago and checked out fine, I’ve got a chain wear tool but haven’t tried it yet (never used one before) but I will.

Any other useful feedback is really appreciated!

To be honest we have/ had three levos and to a much lesser extent our click like that but no where near as bad as yours im convinced iits to do with sram mechs being very sensative to b screw tension acompanied with crappy bearings or even bushings in the jocky wheels.
If you dont know your way round a rear mech watch some you tube vids on deralier setup but very first step is to check your chain wear, if the chain is worn thats your problem.
I dont know who your local bike shop is so i mean no disrespect to them but some of the bike machanics i have met should be watching youtube vids on how to set up rear deraliers as well,!

Sweet - thanks both. I'll dig the chain tool out tonight and give it a poke, then if that's it I'll just buy a new one and see what happens. I suppose I might as well buy a new one now anyway and have it in hand for when I need it eventually!

Definitely the chain, tool fits in on both sides, .75 and 1. Surprised they didn’t pick that up at the local shop but.....

Well it wasn't the chain after all. Changed that this morning, still clicking in the same weird way, in the same gear as before. Any other suggestions?

is it only doing it in 10t cog and 42t cog? check B screw see if the top wheel of the mech is catching on the cogs if it is screw the B screw in a bit. also check the mech alignment, is the hanger bent, are the jockey wheels in line with the cog .
if you dont know take it to your lbs

I dropped by the lbs this morning and they said they could have a look but not until the end of the month so I'm going to have a pop at it myself.

Lots of B screw videos on you tube so I'll have a look at those and see what I can change. Also some on mech alignment.

Oh and yes it's only in the second-to-top gear, it's not when shifting, shifting itself is fine, it just happens when everything is under load, and only high loads at that.

Cheers all!

watching your vid again Im more inclined to think its indexing have you tried adjusting the cable tensioner in or out on the shifter you could try putting the bike in the gear that slips and then try either tightening the cable tension or loosening it a half turn at a time to see what happens.
sorry I can be more helpful but its really hard to tell just by listening.

Ah I understand, getting better video is a bit difficult whilst riding! Thanks for the help.

I can totally play with the cable tensioner as well, didn't;t know if that would have any effect on the gears when I'm _not_ shifting though. But can still give it a poke and see

if the cable is a bit tight it can pull the mech over a bit and the chain will be trying to climb up on to the next cog, not quite making it and then slipping back hence the clicking.......maybe

That’s what it sounds like to me... chain trying to climb but not making it.

Yeah i dont think you are wrong about possible bent mech hanger, if you think about b screws and limit screws dont usually wind themselves in and out so if it was working and now its not its got to be down to worn, or damaged right?
And thats likely
Bent mech hanger
Streched cable or sticking
Broken/ worn cassette
Not chain cos hes put a new one on

I had an annoying click for the last two days. I thought I had narrowed it down to the pedals or the bottom bracket. Washed the bike today and regreased the seat post, and thankfully the click has gone. Shows how hard it can be to identify the source of a click or a squeak!

So I found the problem, shows how easy even an expert lbs can miss things. The cassette is worn on about a third of the teeth on that gear, hence intermittent and weird.

Got a guy at work to follow me up and down the street and we clocked it in the end.

New cassette bought. Now I need to train myself to avoid changing gear under load I suppose?

Huge, huge thanks for everyone chipping in on this. I know I have low knowledge about this specialist subject but I’m keen to learn and I’ve found asking questions to be the most useful way to do that.

Thanks!

Before you buy a new cassette. a replacement 13T sprocket will cost you less than a fiver.
sorry. I can't remember if you said the chain was fine (wear wise) or not

See this is great advice, I had no idea cassettes weren’t a solid lump.

I’ve already ordered the cassette, but there’s nothing to stop me changing the sprocket on the existing cassette and keeping it for the next time. Thanks again for the help :)

Is your rear hub sram driver or shimano freehub? If its the 1150 cassette on the sram driver i dint think you could change individual sprockets, ( mine looks like they are riveted together) if its the 1130 cassete on a shimano freehub then you can change them

which model is yours? they put different cassettes depending on the model for instance mine is a comp 2018 and it comes with the 1130 cassette and the shimano freehub
the 2017 comp comes with a sram driver and the 1150 cassette
all levels above comp should come with 1150 and upwards
