I have a Nissan Navara double cab, a few years old but works well with a blanket over the tailgate. It's the old model but not sure the new ones are any better, the v6 is the best and fuel economy is almost the same.

I don't have a ute, but the guys I know that do use a couple wire ropes - 1 at the front tiedown points through the frames and the other through the rear wheels.

I would take the battery out to be on the safe side, but it shouldn't be a problem

Not forgetting to cover/protect the now exposed battery terminals I assume ?.

(Personally I would rather leave the battery fitted than risk dirt/water/salt ingress and corrosion.)

I too have an Amarok and as much as I love it, its crap for carrying bikes in the back, my kenevo goes in just, diagonally rear wheel first, and have to remove front wheel, pain in the backside to be honest

Yes, but I would have thought that is obvious. You cn get dedicated covers for a lot of bikes now, not sure about the Specilizeds

I added some wooden blocks under a budget bike rack so it locks on the tailgate, I have a rolltop cover which takes a bit of floor space at the front but is handy for stowing bags on a trip. Handles 5 bikes at a pinch with pedals removed. Bloody handy at bike parks to do a bit of maintenance almost makes me look professional......
