Review: After chasing the “coil-like” feel enough to know that this state of “perfection” doesn’t exist in the land of the air shock, I ran into the Telum—while looking at a Secus for a more coil-like feel for my fork. 🤦🏻‍♂️

Having considered an EXT E-Storia in the past when building out my Crestline (Troydon talked me out of it), I knew enough to know that the Telum addressed my major concern about being stuck between springs with the Spridex adjustable coil. Being the impulsive person that I am, I pulled the trigger (and bought the Secus at the same time—lol, gotta keep chasing the coil).

The build and wait time was about 4 weeks vs. the stated lead time on the website but that was still well within the range of 6 weeks that I considered realistic. The one thing to watch out for when ordering is to be sure that you get your invite to the Tuning Hub and that you fill out the Tuning Information Questionnaire. Something got out of whack and I didn't get the invite and form till I asked for it when I checked in on the ETA at week 4.

Once it was built and tuned, I paid the balance due (you only have to pre-pay $200 to get the process going) and it was shipped out. Fair warning, I'm in the US and there was some duty/customs stuff that ended up with me having to pay another $128 to get the shock delivered.

The shock arrived pre-tuned and ready to go right outta the box.

Inside was the Tuning Report some spare spring adapters (and a spare footstud for my Secus-the guys at Vorsprung really go the extra mile to help out).

All the mounting hardware is already in place-I did ask about swapping out the lower bushing for a needle bearing-it is usually helpful with a VPP-but after getting a primer on what would be required and the fact that there was spherical bearing already installed I passed on even thinking about swapping it out. The QR code on the box sidn't take me to the Install Instructions so I had to root around in my email to find the link to the PDF as it is not on the website with the rest of their manuals (annoying). After confirming that there was nothing special to do to install it, I swapped out my RS SDLX Ultimate (with the new Meg Neg on it - the king can did make a big difference BTW and made it feel, you guessed it, more coil-like...hahaha).

The mounting hardware/bushings were a tad over 30.55mm on the lower eyelet so fitting it into the Cascade link was a little bit of a process but the whole thing got done in about 30 mins so no big deal.

After getting it all mounted, I had to see what Vorsprung had set me up with...Definitely more squish! Next step, test ride! I took it on a 20 mile ride to see if I had just made a $1200 mistake or if I was truly headed towards the promiseland.

The ride had a nice mix of technical climbs ans descents that gave the Telum a pretty thorough hammering. The high-speed (at least for me) descents over rock shelves and roots felt controlled and not too harsh; no packed down feeling - it's not like you can float over a washboard of rock shelves at speed though I might open up the HSC a bit. We also did a bunch of rooty and loose technical climbs to get out of the Redwood bowl and the Telum felt very planted; I definitely felt that I had improved traction and a new found confidence or what were sketchy technical climbs...while, one ride is hardly enough time to declare coil nirvana, I can say that I now get the attraction and why every air shock is chasing the "coil-like" feel.

Pros:
- Sick build quality
- Adjustable coil (Spridex) so no getting stuck between spring weights
- Ready to ride straight out of the box thanks to Pro tune and build

Cons:
- Pricey
- Heavier than a air spring
- Lead time for build

Honestly, the only real con is the cost; at double the price of my Rockshox SDLX Ultimate that it replaced its not a cheap upgrade but so far, it feels like it was worth it.

I've only had one ride because I've been sick as a dog, but I've had mine on the bike for 3 weeks now.

The first ride out on it I could immediately feel the difference. There's a heap more upper mid stroke support vs coil. With the air shock it feels like you get either a supple top end with little mid stroke or more mid stroke at the cost of off the top suppleness.

With the coil you get both. I haven't had a full test run with hard riding but initial feel was that I had a lot more traction in the rear end and with the upper mid stroke support it was a lot easier to pump the bike.

No massive hits yet but I definitely feel like it probably won't bottom out as nicely as the air shock, but what jumping I did do felt like I traded a touch of pop for a more consistent feel that left me feeling more confident off the jumps (I'm not a massively confident jumper but this certainly felt a lot more comfortable with the linear nature and more predictable rebound).

So yeh, very happy with it and having a company that has a full valve / setup before sending the suspension out to get it in the ballpark is a great touch that takes out so much of the guess work.

Thanks for the review! I’ve got on my Nomad and I love it. I’ll likely get one for my Crestline too. Can I ask if you’re running a lower spring rate than expected? I’m running about 65lbs lighter than I was with a DHX2 or RS SDU coil on my Nomad. There’s a lot of hydraulic support going on in there!

Really great product alright. I have one on my Crestline too.
I'm running a way lower spring rate than normal. I think 540lb when I had 570lb on both my ebike and dh bike.

TF Tuned’s calc showed me on a 482 (others showed me mid 500s) vs. the 420 that Vorsprung has the coil set at...I need to check with them as they didn't seem to note that I told them that I was running 182mm in the rear as the 75/50 has a different Cascade linkage than the RS180 but 7mm of travel has a minute impact compared to weight and ride so the lower spring rate surprised me even though I tuned towards plush (ended up with an estimated 37% sag according the the tuning report). That said, when you factor in that I'm 200lbs, it gets even more surprising.

I grabbed some shots from other people's All Trails reviews to show some sections of the test ride - sorry for some of them being pretty low res.

I felt the solid mid-stroke support and had no top-out or bottom-out; the biggest drops were only 2-3ft drop, so that was no surprise.

I did feel like I needed to tweak the LSC & HSC a bit as it felt a little harsher than I expected on the fast downhill section pictures of that, but it's about 2 miles of root and rock drops mixed with glacial slabs of rock, with a nasty washboard-like surface that you hit at speed, but that was the only place it felt harsh. This also may have been me expecting the impossible "floating over the bumps" feeling that is not reasonable given the rapid-fire hits.

Even then, it wasn't bad, but with this being my first coil, I don't really have a proper frame of reference.

I will say the thing I liked the most was the increase in traction. It made me feel way more planted on the steep technical climbs where it's loose over hardpack with a nice helping of large roots to get over...

It is early days, but I like the ride, especially when paired with my latest Zeb Runt + Secus experiment. Crestline now feels super planted and less jittery.
