Does anyone know what the LBS does with an old motor that’s replaced under warranty ? I sure would like a couple 😬

Wich brand are you looking for? I have a shimano e8000 with error code 010. At 5.000 km it seems to have all mechanical in pretty good shape. I have no PCB expertise so am not going to open it to have a look inside.
Shimano denied warranty because i used “third party” tool to change region from eu to usa.

Motors replaced under warranty are returned and refurbished to be used as warranty replacements.

Currently I would like to have on hand a Yamaha x-2 and a Giant x-3 , warranty is a joke, I fix my own rides period as long as parts are available. Thanks

Are you serious !? So I get a “used motor “ in warranty replacement ? Are you sure about that. If true then the mfg’ers have everything to rebuild our motors but won’t sell us the necessary parts to do it ourselves. Haha that kills me. Not only will they be making coin on our original sale but now out of warranty we have to buy an entire new/used motor !? Wow the more I see about the ebike industry the more I see how lucrative it is for Them. Needless to say I’m not impressed. Can you imagine if that was the case with Mx bikes or quads etc. We sure tolerate a lot of bs on thousands of dollar purchases…

No, you get a fully refurbished motor.

Not necessarily. There are places that refurbish motors, like Performanceline Bearings in the UK. Homepage - eBike Motor Centre (Performance Line Bearings)
If you buy a new motor you'll get a fresh factory warranty.

Manufacturers offering a swap-out service with refurbished motors is beneficial to both parties; manufacturers get to collect data on failures and owners get back on the trails sooner. Can you imagine how long it would take if the LBS has to fault find, strip, clean, get approval and reassemble rather than just swapping it out? You'd then get more variables in the quality of workmanship, especially when working to tight workshop schedules to maximise profit. Shops would either need to carry spares (capital tied up) or order the parts as required (delays). Is the manufacturer going to pay full workshop rates for the work or a vastly reduced labour rate, do you think? What will that do to the quality of the reapir?

Been there done all that. I was a National Service manager for over 20 years for over 30 different manufacturers and almost had a nervous breakdown over “developmental “ issues. When discussing product problems with the engineers who designed the units outright say “ it’s impossible for that to be happening “ or whatever. When you have hundreds of units faulting with no answers from engineering what do you do? Replace, with the same brand new problematic units knowing full well that the same issues are still there… At one point we returned so many products to the manufacturers that they has us smash the faulty ones and dump them after we took pictures of them being destroyed. Needless to go on here. Stuff that goes on behind the scenes that the general public knows nothing about is astounding !
And sorry but rebuilt or refurbished is Used and was never offered as a warranty replacement ever , it’s just not ethical or legal in Canada . When something has been used/rebuilt is must be stated as such and offered for sale at a discounted price from new. At least that was the case in “the day “. Cheers

Could you please explain this ?
I used a software : stunlocker, to change the region from europe witch was first delivered to region usa when I moved with the bike to Brazil, where region USA is legal. I also changed the dreaileur config from cable to di2 using this sofware. Shimano argues that usin third part tool invalidates the warant and did not even bother saying what caused the errror and returned the failed motor. The motor worked very very well with these two simple settings for over two years and suddenly died.
I simply put a new motor I bought at the commencal site, the motor has an older firmware and is working perfectly with region usa and di2 as the other one was doing before, all changed with another license of the same third part "software that works".

OMG ! The deeper I get into the politics of ebike manufacturers the more turned off I get. Too bad they are such a Blast. Glad you’re back on two wheels. Thanks for the information.

I wonder if there’s anyone who’s had so many motor warranty replacements they’ve gone full circle and been lucky enough to have their original motor back 🥳
