I’m 95% sold on a Trek Rail 9.9, and will be looking to go to my LBS and try and work a deal in the next week.

I was in talking to one of the techs about the Rail in general and sitting on a Rail 7 a couple of weeks ago. He said I should ask the manager for a discount, as he was sure I’d get something off if I was spending that much.

Within a couple of miles, I have 2 shops that sell Trek. One is Evans, and the other is a smaller shop who have a couple of stores in Scotland.
If I buy online through Evans (in store collection), I’d get 4% cashback through Quidco - which is approximately £380. Better than a kick in the teeth, but ideally I’d like a bit more.

What sort of figure should I have in mind when negotiating a deal? I’ve read of people getting up to 20% off some bikes! That’d be a nice saving.
Both shops have the bike in stock - although not in my local store.

Well Rutland were doing 15% off on all full price bikes in their Boxing Day/new year sale. They sell trek also

Just checked. Still on for 2 more days. Discount code is MATCH15

Fabulous!! Thank you.
Although Rutland only do in store collection (and I’m in Aberdeen) I can hopefully use that to get a price match. If not, it’ll be worth taking a trip down south to collect!
I’d also get 3% cashback with Quidco on that too - which would cover my travel expenses.

I’m in Tenerife for New Year at the moment, but I’ll send out a few emails and see if I can sort something. I’d also like to ask my employer if they’ll do cycle2work.

I’ve emailed my LBS and asked if they can match. Not much time, since the offer runs out on Sunday. Shame I unsubscribed from Rutlands mailshots, as I could have probably been more prepared.

Evans only price match with about 6 different stores (Rutland is not on the list), so if I have no reply from my LBS by Sunday, I might have to buy from Rutland, and drive 400+ miles to collect from Nottingham and 400+ miles home! Seems extreme, but it’s a saving of almost £1500 + £240 cashback.

I’m heading home tomorrow, so could maybe try going in-store to both shops on Sunday and see if there is something they can do.

For £1740 saving I’d walk if I had too!??

My LBS can only do 5% off, so that’s no use!
I’ll try going into my local Evans today and see what they can do.
If not, I guess I’ll be ordering from Rutland today and asking to collect from Nottingham next weekend. 822 mile round trip, and google maps thinks it’ll take me about 15 hours!!

Probably about £300 on fuel, and a full day driving... but I’d still save about £1400, and I’d get £95 of Rutland points that I could use online.
I drove from Glasgow to Aberdeen last night (about 125 miles) and was bored out of my brains ?

It will be worth it I suppose. Can you not turn it in to a weekend away.
£300 for 822 miles. What car do you drive that does 15mpg? Might be worth hiring a 60 mpg diesel for the day and will cost £70-80 in fuel

£300 on fuel to drive 822 miles? What are you picking it up in, a Bugatti Veyron?! ? At current prices using supermarket fuel a diesel doing only 40mpg would cost around £120 for that journey; mine does 55 on a run so would be less than £100. Add ~£200 to your savings/upgrades/riding kit fund! ?

Have you checked they’ve got your size in stock?
Be a real shame to drive your planet destroying gas guzzler all that way to find it’s out of stock...

Arrange your own courier
I wondered if that was an option - then they weren’t delivering. I was going to call and ask if Evans didn’t play ball.

Have you checked they’ve got your size in stock?
They did - I was going to buy online, then collect the following week if I did actually have to collect.

£300 for 822 miles. What car do you drive that does 15mpg?
It’s a 5L F-Pace. I got about 320 miles to Glasgow airport and back for £83 averaging 25mpg. I guess 822 miles would be more like £220 based on that!

The good news is none of this matters anymore. I’m just back from Evans, and they were more than happy to price match. I’ll lose out on the Quidco cashback, but will still get the 15% off. Their quote is also valid for a week, so I don’t need to rush and pull the trigger before tonight!

They have to order it in for me, so that’ll give me time to get an invisi-frame kit, and some other bits and bobs.
My current 2017 Stumpjumper has a huge SWAT compartment in the downtube where I keep a spare tube, Co2 cartridges etc - so I’ll have to look at an alternative for that too.

Excellent news !

For storage, @Doomanic uploaded an exploded parts diagram for the ally version :

Rail Battery Parts Diagrams - EMTB Forums

You can see that if you're willing to give up the battery, you end up with a huge storage area for food and drink, which you'll need without the battery. ;):)

There's quite a few threads on "storage" .. from backpacks to waist packs, on bike storage bags, under saddle bags, frame bags, twin bottle frames - so you can have a bottle keg next to your water bottle ..

Trek require you to buy the bike in a store - no online sales. Not sure why, but I’ve had a similar thing in the past with golf club manufacturers that require you to buy in store.
Rutland could deliver me a Levo... just not give me 15% off it!

Ha I thought Yorkshire was the furthest north you could go. My mistake i think i was actually thinking shetlands or outer hebrides they never post to those places do they. I'm no stranger to scotland too and have a gcse in geography you wouldn't think so though would you.
