Do you know is so ironic. In the daily mail, the gammons are squeaking how riders must stick to riding on cycle paths, and be forced to by law.
Previously any idea touted by any local council about installing a cyclepath is demonized by the DM and scorned poured on it by its readership, to the point they're squeaking that cycle paths are a nuisance and cause congestion, and take up space that other road users(in other words their cars) would normally use.

If anything, it confirms that the DM readership are low IQ knuckle draggers with hardly a brain cell between them.

And then indicators And road tax, and instant fines for riding on the pavement etc Seriously though where would they draw the line because street BMX and Street Trials bikes pretty much always ride out in public areas on pavements/concrete public spaces etc.

Also potentially having to display plates means any member of the public who takes a disliking to a BMX, MTB or Street Trials bike or whatever riding on a pavement could just call their plates into the Police for wreckless endangerment. Cyclists loosing their anonymity could be a real pain in the ass, I've passed plenty of walkers in wooded areas who look disgusted at the sight of MTBs and mumble things under their breath.

When I was kid I actually got fined for riding on the pavement so when did they change the law and make it legal

Speed limits for road cyclists I totally get, if a car has to do 20mph on a certain road then so should cyclists but the whole notion that all cyclists (assuming MTBs as well) have to display number plates that are readable from a distance like car plates is just ridiculous imo

Do they really think that millions of cyclists are suddenly going to register for insurance, a licence, a number plate? The DVLA can't cope with all the cars even now. Every bike will have to have a V5 document if they are to get a number plate so every bike will need a VIN number too.

Honestly, I can't believe the stupidity of this idea.

I do think that crazy cyclists should be held to account for reckless riding but this is hardly the way to ensure they get caught.

Well there are an estimated 20 million bikes in the UK and c 3 million new bikes sold each year. So good luck introducing any universal cycle regulations!

Regarding the horse thing one does have to take quite a few things into account other than the speed at which they can go. An average horse weighs over half a ton but on the roads will usually move at walking pace so while it would be easy to get killed by a horse, it's speed is probably not so much of a problem as they make a noise and it's easy to get out of the way. However, having defended horses I now put forward the other argument (horse shit aside) and that's that horses are not necessarily under the full control of the rider. If you drove a half ton car that, every now and again, suddenly decided to brake, or accelerate, or unaccountably swerve from side to side, you'd have every reason as a pedestrian or cyclist to be rather worried about your vulnerability on the road. AFAIK there is no requirement for horse riders to pass any sort of qualification to take one of these beasts on the road and no insurance is required. Bearing this in mind, it seems disingenuous to pick on cyclists while leaving out poorly-controlled horses -- and crazy pedestrians on phones. Perhaps children should also be licensed so that if they run out into the road and get run over we know who's parents to make a claim against. What about stray cats thrown out at to play chicken with cars, hedgehogs for getting run over and making the roads slippery. Perhaps deer should be fined for having the temerity to not only exceed the speed limit but also to randomly launch themselves into traffic.

My point in all this is that you cannot legislate against every eventuality. By all means bring in a specific law against people who cause death and injury through reckless cycling if you must but I feel we already have enough laws that say you must not kill people.

If you want to bring in a law that would reduce all deaths by whatever method on the roads a law that you have to pass an aptitude test before you can have children should solve a lot of these problems in the future.
