i would recommend 2.8er for rear and 2.5wt or 2.6 for front for a 650b+ emtb (but real width is different from manufacturer to manufacturer and also air pressure plays a role of course).
but this also depends what kind of bike, rims, etc. you have.

Disagree, a lot of people would say go wider up front than on the rear. Personally I'm running 2.8 up front and 2.5 on the rear, but will change to 2.6 on the front when the rubber wears out. I really like the way the bike handles with + on the front and standard on the back. It slackens the HA a fraction and lowers the BB. Some guys are even putting 29" wheels on the front, so there is definitely something in it.
I've never heard of going bigger on the rear than the front though.

29er 2.35 Magic Mary Soft Addix front 27psi on 27mm rim
29er 2.35 Magic Mary Soft Addix rear 29psi but I really need to change this to a Super Gravity or DH version as I keep slashing my rear tyre due to the very rocky/slatey terrain I ride in Wales. The Soft Addix tyre is not suitable for my terrain. Last time out I got 2 punctures on the same run. One was a 10mm slash, the other a 6mm slash.
