As well as the sidewall/carcass ability to hold the tread in place so much depends on the make up of the ground being ridden. Any surface which is hard but with a small layer of loose on top needs the tyre to penetrate that loose layer. In general the width of the tyre tread is narrower at higher pressures and better able to penetrate that upper loose layer......this is proportionate to some degree to the weight on top of the tyre. For deep loose surfaces the opposite applies. It is better if the tyre rides on top and compresses the top layer....deep mud or sand are examples.....lower pressure then increases the width of the tread.
