• Warning!!

Riding a tuned or deristricted EMTB is not a trivial offence and can have serious legal consequences. Also, many manufacturers can detect the use of a tuning device or deristricting method and may decline a repair under warranty if it was modified from the intended original specification. Deristricting EMTB's can also add increased loads for motors and batteries. Riding above the local law limit may reclassify the bike as a low-powered bike, requiring insurance, registration and a number plate.

Be aware of your local country laws. Many laws prohibit use of modified EMTB's. It is your responsibility to check local laws. Ignoring it, has potential implications to trail access, and risk of prosecution in the event of an accident.

Trek Rail Gen4 vs Gen3

Is there a way to get the Gen3 to produce 340% pedal assist?

I ask because the pedal assist for the Gen4 is at 340% whereas it is 300% for the Gen3. The Gen4 has a 100 day order wait time, whereas the Gen3 is available to ship. And the Gen3 is about $2,000 cheaper.

Thanks!

Rail Gen 3 owner here, the pedal assist is 340% for both Gen 3 and 4.

The CX race on top line Gen 4's has 400% for short periods

Not sure why you asked this in the derestricting forum as most smart systems cannot be derestricted

I asked because derestricting is not restricted to only speed.

“The biggest thing for me was the pedal resistance which is almost unnoticeable in gen 4 but it’s like hitting a wall on gen 3, also it’s lighter and smaller. It provides the same amount of torque 75Nm but gen 4 provides 340% assistance in turbo while gen 3 “only” goes up to 300%.”

Sorry I misread what you asked. Its complicated by the fact Trek produce the Rail in Gen 3 and Gen 4 which is what I was referring to.

But it sounds like you are talking about Gen3 and Gen4 Bosch CX motors, which do have differences.

I was waiting for a Rail Gen4 that was going to take 100 days wait while a Gen3 was ready to go. I was tempted to cancel the Gen4 order and get the Gen3 quicker. But, last week the Gen4 arrived after only 30 days. This was consistent with what Trek had previously said that they tend to underpromise and overdeliver.

Now I need to figure out how to load on the bike a first aid kit, inner tube, tools, etc. I do not like carrying stuff on my back. My prior bike was a Specialized and all this went inside the frame. The world of ebikes has a battery inside the frame instead.

Thanks.

(IIRC) went from Bosch CX Gen2 to Bosch CX Gen4 (never was a Bosch CX Gen3 motor).
