Trade-in values?

I’m slightly tempted to upgrade my 2019 Cube Reaction Hybrid Race to a Gen 4 equipped hardtail, but budget would be a big issue for me so wondered if anyone here had an idea of resale / trade in values?

Basically trying to get a feel for what I might need to save for an upgrade?

Have a look on eBay and also Pink Bike Classifieds for bikes like yours. I say "bikes like yours" because unless your bike is 100% stock there won't be one that is identical.

Do not restrict your selling opportunities to the mountain bike crowd. The buyer of my Focus Jam2 9.6 NINE (a carbon framed 29er) was a London commuter!! He just wanted the bike, desperately. I didn't point out that there were better bikes for commuting than that bike. What I did tell him was how great the suspension was on rough terrain, how light it was compared to most emtb etc. He rode the bike around a car park and even with the low pressures in the triple compound tyres he absolutely loved it! I advised him to pump up the tyres when he got home.

Sounds like good sales technique there 😂

So "trade in" in the emtb/mtb world means "rip off"?

Although to be fair, the dealer has to sell on and make a profit after he's fixed all the problems that you didn't know about / failed to reveal.

they're also expected to fix things they didn't know were wrong that cropped up after the bike was sold on

Depends on the dealer. I have a great relationship with my LBS, so when I asked them to do a PX on a new bike, they really went above and beyond to do me a good deal.

Depends on the dealer.
And the bike; make, spec, condition and demand all impact used value. You also have to remember that a savvy dealer is never going to pay more for a used bike than he buys in a new one of the same spec.

Just as in the used car market, a used bike will always net more from a private sale but come with more piece of mind from a dealer.

When I told my LBS that I would be selling my 2.5 years old Focus Jam2 9.6 NINE, he first asked "why on earth do you want to sell it?" Once I had satisfied him on that, he offered to let me use his shop as the collection point! He said that he knew how well the bike had been looked after and that he would have no qualms about putting a word in to the buyer or answering any questions that they might have about the bike. err....WOW! I was able to put in the advert that the LBS was so sure about the bike that ........etc, etc. I subsequently sold the bike for more than I thought I would get and the buyer told me that the LBS factor was a significant plus in his buying decision. :)

On payment day I gave the LBS guy £50 for a few drinks for him and his staff.

He later did the same offer when I was selling my grandson's bike, a Ragley Marley 1.0. :)

Nice!

You have a quality LBS, and maybe more local than the shop I use is to me.

I have always found Part Exchange at the LBS gave the worst value. But as above I am sure it is dealer dependent. Sold 5 different bikes (analogue - no use for them now) in the past 2 years and got good value using local online selling marketplaces. I do fully service them before selling though and have found that makes negotiating easier (buyers did not haggle as much when they saw the condition in person).

Yep, Newark Cycles are good (9 miles away). Owned by two guys, with a few (2 I think) employees. I went to them in initially because the LBS I had been using for years, Cyclesport in Grantham (6 miles away), refused to adopt a booking system. Instead, they wanted me to leave my bike with them for two weeks while it slowly got to the head of the queue. When I said that I wasn't too bothered about the 2-week wait, but could I bring it in the day before? I was told that was queue jumping. So I went elsewhere and found my new best friend Newark Cycles, 53 Balderton Gate, Newark. Although at the time I was astride an mtb, they also do ebikes. When I bought an emtb, although I didn't buy it from him, he was happy to work on it.

Cyclesport has now closed. Can you believe it? When every cycle shop in the UK was working overtime and every bike that wasn't just a bag of spanners on wheels was sold the minute it arrived, it closed! In the interests of balance, the technical work done by Cyclesport was first class and I thought that they were low priced and, except for the lack of a booking system, their customer service was good. I used them for years.

I use RaceCo cycles in Stourbridge for the same reason, when I bought my first EMTB (the one I’m selling) they impressed me most with both the bikes they sold, the knowledge the staff had and the level of service. Oh and they gave me a P/X price on my manual bike that I couldn’t get trying to sell privately at the time. They’ve offered me a P/X price on my bike which might well be decent (it would be self defeating to post it up publicly when I have it listed for sale lol.

Since then I’ve also had my dad buy a nice Cube upgrade from them over his Carrera EMTB he had (trip to the South Downs last summer showed him the difference between the power from a crank motor).

Downside is the 20+ mile drive to the shop (recently they moved premises and are now just 18 miles away - bonus), but I’m happy with that to deal with people that I trust to look after my bike and give good advice.

I can’t believe any bike shop was able to go out of business during the Pandemic, getting dad’s bike last year was a test on the patience. Even now supplies are low, I’m waiting on a call in the next month or so for my new bike to come in. Simply a case of when the stock arrives that they have on order.

Our LBS won’t take trade in’s…ever. So I posted a roady and two gravel bikes on Kijiji market place. They sold within days. Only one buyer tried to haggle with no success. A computer, a triathlete, and a future Olympian(I hope) bought the bikes. Went into the LBS and rode out on a Rail 9.7. Everyone was happy 😊.

I thought you’d made up Kijiji, then googled it shows it’s canada. I wonder if someone shut their eyes and tapped away at their keyboard when coming up with the name? 😂

I don't know why the shop closed. It may not have "gone out of business". I can think of several reasons why the owners may have decided to close. But a bike shop during the pandemic was about as close to a sure thing that you can get. Their LBS in Lincoln also closed, which I only just found out. Curiouser and curiouser!
