Ok.. It's too cold really to bbq outside now ..

I'm quite enjoying tonights impromptu experiment of bbq'ing on a (or someone elses) wood burner !

@Rusty - recipes and tips greatly appreciated.

@dobbyhasfriends is there such a thing as a sausage ramp - or is that for a completely different type of website ?

Ha! ZF is doing an in-door Braai!
Definitely ! .. been a braai fan for a long long time :) Why not bring it in !

@R120 Cool, thanks for that .. have never tried direct .. On this fire you can get away with "big loggin" so I can just spin the log over part way though and try straight on the burnt flat side.

A bit of ash did a perfect job of cleaning up any fat splatter ! :)

Pizza stone on top the bbq grill might work.
I used to have a modified oven tray that would fit into my morso stove that I could do pies and baked potatoes with. The key was to work out how many wraps of tinfoil were required so you could leave the food in there long enough to cook, but not incinerate.

I just searched that out of curiosity .. (with some fear ....)


And I think this one actually sorts out some of @dobbyhasfriends sausage ramp problems . Collapsible, portable, variable !

Well, I like to get about .. Life moves pretty fast, if you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it .. (Ferris Bueller's Day Off)

It won't let me access their menu for some reason, but I did read this :

"Zim uses traditional open flame cooking methods with balanced menu of Meat, Fish and Plant wrapped up with first class service, striking design and with a vibrant atmosphere"

Which seemed almost 100% accurate, except for two parts, hence a trip to the supermarket for a selection of plants but I couldn't find a roll/pack/box/can/bottle/spray of first class service anywhere - must be one of those lockdown products pulled from the shelves so as not to upset the shops which specialise in providing first class service. So I gave up and bought a thick steak to try @R120's dirty BBQ instead.

Finally got into the "Zim Braai" menu ... Looks nice, I think I might have to spend the next few weeks working my way though it !

Though I'd highly advise anyone not to eat "Zim Prawns" o_O :ROFLMAO: I quite fancy trying the "Zim's espresso martini" ..

Ok .. So I tried the @R120 "Dirty BBQ" !!!! (also called Dirty Steaks & Caveman Steaks)

Fire hadn't been going today so I didn't have a nice bed of "coals" (charcoal) ready.

Set the fire up and put a slightly green oak half round in the middle and built a fire on top of that (top down lighting if you've tried it, no smoke) - the intention being to use that as my charcoal bed to cook on. The idea with slightly green is that it would still be nice and flat to cook on ...

Some time later, cleared the rest of the fire off that and let it stop flaming for 5 minutes ..

Then whopped on the steak ..

AND ! .. it didn't quite goto plan .. the Oak, being oak, and slightly green still, hadn't got warm enough .. It was brazing the steak, but only just ..

So braved moving the steak off into the charcoal jungle off the to the right ... this worked much better ! Even though it looked like a BBQ disaster !

A couple of flips with some tongues then fished her out, a quick scrape with a knife to clear any charcoal lumps , though there was surprisingly little residue !!!!

Our reviewer says 8/10 ! Very tasty - one edge was slightly too charcoal tasting, but the rest was just lush ! Any charcoal I'd missed on the underside somehow came off onto the plate.

So in the future .. drop a burger/sausage/steak/tomato through ... don't panic - fish that sucker back out and carry on !

Sweet .. thanks @R120 I would never in 1,000,000 years have even considered that as an option !

I have been to Zim Braai few times, authentic food, made really well.

One of my favourite is Bunny Chow... and before you judge me, it’s a small loaf of bread emptied inside and filled with good curry!

Was late starting fire .. so letting Clarabelle "relax" a while whilst the flames diminish ... @BAMBAMODA you're our winter bbq survival expert at the moment .. or do you normally get distracted by lady's part way through the process ?

Well you lot aren't much use ! What's the point in having on-line access to a man cave full of 1000's of experienced cavemen !

I bet if I asked if I should spray it purple there'd be opinions ! :ROFLMAO:

Stuff it, it's on now, it's either going to be Blue, rare or medium not cooked enough. I would ask @Waynemarlow or @apac but I fear I'd only be suggested to use at least 48v.

Haha. If you can put in your fire pit a nice slab of granite you’d have the perfect hot stone. But any rock would do....I’m sure sandstone would suck.

couple ways to do it.....use two sticks to take the rock out and sit buy it and cut each bite of steak and cook it and eat it hot. This is a pretty good way. Whole steak at a time is good too. Depends how you like your steak.
It's not often I say this, but I like your mini slab's of beef idea .. My mega slab has been one of my best steaks ever .. though that might be down to the company ..... or the beer ... or the lack of fresh river rocks causing death .. or the perfect 63 amps ...

In fairness @routrax did suggest the pizza stone early on ... So I might have to knock up a nice slab of polished (not purple) granite to try. Or die from radon exposure in the meantime ..

Whoop Whoop !

Pretty much ended up like that other than slightly over cooking .. the middle log was part of my "desperate heat" solution, so it's was pretty soggy and not hot anyway :) But sound advice !!!! The fire was still a tad warmer than I thought .. doh ! Still, it was lush !!
