Swapping to an E7000 mode shifter

Hi all, new to the forum!

I’ve recently just purchased a Merida EOne Twenty which I am absolutely loving. The only thing I’m not enjoying is the inability to run a below-bar dropper post remote. I am wondering whether I am able to swap out my current E8000 shifter for an E7000 shifter? If it is possible to do so (which Google seems to think it is..) how do I go about linking the new shifter to the motor? Apologies in advance for the noob questions!

Yes, you can. It's a plug and play, you don't have to do anything but you might have a hard time to find the E7000 switch at the moment. The E6000 switch is also a popular option, the third button changes the display info - the E7000 switch has two buttons.

I changed to the E6000 and it's deffo the best I've used

There are some E7000 ones available on bike24 currently: Shimano STePS SW-E7000-L Switch - left

Make sure to get one with a long enough cable. It should just be a case of pulling the cable from your existing shifter out of the bottom of the display and plugging the cable from a new shifter back into the same hole. The only thing that may cause it to not work is if you have an older firmware on some part of your E8000 system - if that happens then just doing an update (e.g. from the app) should be enough.

Cables are interchangeable with the old switch so length is less of a problem... buy whichever is available.

I'm waiting for the E7000 also, in the meantime I just moved the shifter to the right and put the dropper lever where it belongs. Still easy to reach the shifter.

This is not correct, the cables are fixed into the end of the switches, so you cannot remove the cable from one switch to another. You must make sure that you buy the right length cable in the first place

My bad, it’s removable from the E8000 switch. Then buy at least a 400mm that should be enough for everything...

Just be aware that the E7000 shifter isn’t currently supported on the E-Tube app.

Just bought a new E-Sommet VR but unable to use the app as it errors due to unsupported components. See my separate thread.

Here's mine.setup with Guide RE and the newer BrandX Dropper remote.

It's a nice enough remote lever just a touch shorter than optimum so wondering what levers other folk are using. .

Try the PNW Loam Lever, its both the best lever I have used, and also imo the best mad I have seen. The light action version of the Wolf Tooth lever is also long - I am currently using the One Up remote on a Sram MMX mount, I really like it , but its not long.

The wolf tooth and the PNW Loam do sit quite close to the bars though compared to the Band X and One Up

closer to the bars is better. Although all your lever set ups are even further inboard than mine.
I have 2 unused brand X droppers so justI nicked the new lever from the newest but it's only a few mm longer than my cut down original lever. The other spare BX has the original remote (uncut obvs) and I did think about fitting that to get the lever over more. I changed the hinge bolt on my cut down one to a flanged buttonhead bolt and flanged nylock nut and it's got none of that horrible play they have as supplied. (it's still not as nice (or light) action as the newer BX remote though).

These tiny wee E7000 buttons mounted right up by the lock on collar are actually going to take me a little time to get used to after 10 months on the E8000s. I switch mode quite a bit during rough descents and fast sections and the E8000 is pretty awesome for that. I actually really like it.The main reason I've switched to the E7000 is because it's far more tucked away from damage and should be more robust in a crash. That and vanity. The E8000 controller is hella ugly.

I find the Light Action mmx Wolftooth/E6000 set up almost perfect, but I haven't tried the E7000 controller yet.
Nice to be able to toggle thru the E6000 to check the time etc.

I'm running a Bikeyoke remote and put the assist switch out of the way because I rarely change the mode - Eco on tarmac and Trail off-road. Saints have shorter lever than Guides so they are closer to the grip.

I rarely change the assist mode I'm using the gears. When I'm riding trails I use 'Trail' mode set to Mid and that's enough for me everywhere. 'Boost' wouldn't be good on any technical stuff I find it too aggressive and on fire roads etc. I use Eco.

Yeah. my trail is set to mid, boost to high. flicking over to boost is pretty awesome at times on FAST technical terrain I'm obviously nothing like you in riding style as I rarely change gear riding tech or descending but do change mode.

Well my E6000 mode shifter unit finally arrived and I’m pretty happy with it. After a few rides I can see that the E7000 would probably have been better but it’s still a big improvement on the E8000 - for me anyway!

The only thing I don’t really like about the E6000 is the buttons are a bit small and fiddly. However, I’m not really fussed as I change mode so rarely - trail everywhere ?

Also - I had a but of trouble fitting my dropper post remote under the E6000 unit. I have the shorter Wolftooth lever and it bumped against the bottom of the mode switch, unless you had it sitting up really high which felt horrible to use. Sooo ended up with a slightly weird compromise - however after a couple of rides I’m really enjoying it. I barely switch modes while riding, use my dropper constantly and shift gears frequently, so having the dropper lever and gear shifter in their optimum positions is my priority.

Anyway, very happy with the upgrade.
