Strive ON:Underdog - DB8 - Rear Caliper

Hi All,

I've had the Strive:ON Underdog for just over a year, and pushed over 6000km through it. Its on its second motor - (crank play was the warranty issue).

However, i digress.. I've been thinking of replacing the brakes for a while now as the rear specifically seems to manifest an odd problem with the pad wear - every time, (and i have replaced pads over 10 times on the rear with these DB8's) and on the second rotor too.

Would anyone who owns an Underdog check their Caliper mount on the rear - I've attached pics of mine as it was received from Canyon - (LBS thinks the mount/washer config may be wrong).

Also attached is the pad wear - so wears more at the bottom of pad than top..

Insight welcome, and yes, appreciate a change in brake overall is also an option - but if there is anything I can do now to limit this uneven wear that may help with the annoying scraping noises!!

I would say your LBS is right. The calliper is not correctly positioned if the pad is wearing on the bottom edge.........it means the calliper is mounted too high, or angled in at the bottom. If it is the former then it has the wrong adaptor.....if it is the latter the calliper fixing is not set up with the type of shouldered spacer between the adaptor and calliper that enables a djustment.

Maybe ask others on here with the same bike to upload a photo of their rear calliper to spot any differences.

Seems odd, you would need to place the wheel back and see if the rotor is taking correctly the place inside the caliper. To me the caliper is in the right position,

On my Spectral CF, I got rid of the rounded spacers before the bolt for flat one, this is the only bike I have issue with caliper and rotor. My guess is that tolerance on their frame is pretty bad on caliper mount points.

You can really discover this if you go with thicker rotor, the rotor would touch pad, sometime in/out pad like if the rotor would be bent. In early ride, my rotors always touch the pad which is a nightmare, but after a few it become normal.

In any case DB8 are cheap and not really good, you would definitely benefit from something with more power and modulation - if your riding requires it of course.

I advise you doing it by your LBS if you are not really in the mood to play with alignment etc as it can be painful for people, plus when buying brake you should also buy the adapter from the same brand to be sure to avoid misalignment issue.
Eg: I use a shimano adapter caliper for a Hayes caliper and it is far from perfect but it works.

Side not, it also seems that you do not get most of the power from your current brake so be really careful when you will fix them or switch to something more powerful, OTP is not that far.

Sorry for the delayed reply here, and thanks for the responses - I appreciate the DB8's are pretty poor in overall stature - but will persevere just now.

Anyone with a Strive:ON Underdog that's not in the LBS - would you please post a pic of your rear caliper setup as per my pic in the first post so I can compare?

What I have done just now is ordered a new DB8 rear and whilst its in at the LBS for Strive:ON power issues.... they will fit the new brake at the same time.

I've also always noticed the outboard pistons are much more free - and even after a clean and prime every pad change they always come out quicker and therefore I'd say are causing a problem with the wear characteristics..

Next stop new brakes - but for now - i am just looking to get these ones working as intended - and they do stop me don't get me wrong - but I've had better over the years.
