United Laboratories has responded (by phone and by email) to my question if a Canyon bike that interests me is UL certified. They provided a link for individuals to check whether any bike is UL certified.UL 2849 is whole bike evaluation and testing procedure, not just the batteries. The test details are described in the above video by Ark.
UL is an independent testing system whereas CE is a self-certification system by the manufacturers
I will be replacing my 2021 Merida with a UL compliant and I have contacted UL (they invite contact through their website) to obtain confirmation if the replacement candidates are UL2849 compliant.
Believe it's "Underwriter's Laboratories", in case anyone is searching it up. Been around forever.United Laboratories has responded (by phone and by email) to my question if a Canyon bike that interests me is UL certified. Please note that UL2849 provides certification of the whole bike system, not just the battery. The video in Ark's previous post 'UL certification for Electric Bikes - What does it mean?' reports the wide scope and whole journey testing provided under UL2849. UL is internationally recognised with facilities in different countries including UK, Germany, USA and Canada.
The Bosch tube photo by Arminius (above) evidences CE and UKCA certification of the battery (only)
CE and UKCA allows self-certification by the manufacturer - UL2849 provides independent certification.
I could envisage a situation where UL2849 certified bikes could be recognised as safe products by hotels, bike shops, fire services, transport systems, etc. and that we could store our bikes indoors without needing to buy additional fire alarms.
They are now branded UL Solutions and approx. half of e-bike manufacturers use UL2849 certification. UL2849 provides a good chance of a 'recognised' safety standard of e-bike electrical systems, including the batteries. Worth checking (link provided above) if your next bike complies.Believe it's "Underwriter's Laboratories", in case anyone is searching it up. Been around forever.
Cheers.
Spontaneous e-bike fire on Toronto TTC (subway).
Very scary.
I store my Trek Powerfly battery inside my apartment over the winter.
Could anyone possibly discern from the photo the brand of the e-bike? Hope it is not one of the major brands.
