Shimano release new 630Wh batteries

Shimano has introduced three new e-bike batteries into its SHIMANO STEPS line-up including internal and external versions of its 630Wh largest capacity batteries for even longer rides.
• The high-performance BT-E8036 becomes Shimano’s largest integrated battery with a range-expanding 630Wh capacity.
• The BT-E8035-L integrated battery retains the same dimensions but comes with a smaller 504Wh capacity and a faster 4-hour charging time (80% charge in 2.5 hours).
• As well as the two downtube integrated options, the new 630Wh BT-E8016 becomes Shimano’s largest external battery, coming with a new fitting port, the BM-E8016 battery mount.

Much like other SHIMANO STEPS batteries, the new BT-E8036, BT-E8035-L and BT-E8016 offer an extremely long lifetime. Even after 1000 full charge cycles (which would take 19 years of once a week charges to reach!) the new batteries will still hold 60% of their capacity. This means you can focus on the trail rather than on your battery indicator.
With these new SHIMANO STEPS additions customers now have the choice of 10 batteries with either rear carrier, external type or downtube-integrated positions and faster-charging 418Wh or 504Wh batteries or extended riding capacity 630Wh options.

Ps - the intube batteries are longer than the current batteries. So probably won’t fit current BT8035 based bikes

DRIVETRAIN ADDITIONS
E-bike cranksets receive an addition with a new 12-speed chainring compatible with 157mm O.L.D. hubs. The SM-CRE80-12-SB chainring comes in 34T or 36T options, both with DYNAMIC CHAIN ENGAGEMENT+ teeth to prevent the possibility of dropping a chain.

A new complementary chain device (CD-EM800) is also available (pictured above). The new mud-shedding design provides additional chain management and is compatible with 11-speed and 12-speed SHIMANO STEPS set ups running 56.5mm or 53mm chain lines thanks to an adjustable space between the guide and chain.
NEW CYCLE COMPUTER DISPLAY
A new addition is coming to SHIMANO STEPS urban e-bike controls that will make handlebar set ups even cleaner.
The new SC-E5000 unified cycle computer display comes with integrated switches for ramping up or down the SHIMANO STEPS assist level. Additional buttons allow for connected lights to be switched on/off and for accessing display menus.
The SC-E5000 computer is compatible with existing SHIMANO STEPS system, allowing consumers to upgrade their existing e-bikes.

Typical, I just go and buy 2 chain devices and they bring out another! Still think theirs are a bad design as you have to remove spider to install

Is the 630 external battery a straight swap for the 504?

It looks like it may be (external battery), but you need a new bottom mount - hopefully the new bottom mount would also work with the existing external battery. In the pics the battery look fatter/taller than the existing, not longer

Definitely look chunkier rather than longer - nearly 1kg heavier than the current external

Yeah, that's an absolutely terrible design
Shimano have never managed to actually understand chainguides though.
look at the absolute mess of ideas they came up with for their SAINT chain guides

so the question is whether it is worth the extra weight or if you buy an extra 500 watt spare battery to have in your car so you can change.

Bit of an ask expecting otherwise really, or they'd be onto something with more significance than emtb. What surprises me though is that the not-so-fashionable BT-E8010 battery remains their best for capacity to weight ratio, which leaves me glad I'm not a dedicated follower of fashion.

Not for the external battery. A lot of flexibility in dimensions and packaging there. They could have come up with a 630 or 700 battery that would fit with a "bulge". With some parametric CAD software I'm pretty sure I could do it in about 5 minutes. ;-)

How about the new motor? I bet they will release two options, one for lighter use like urban/gravel/xc and one for the enduro/trail

Agreed, one of the things which attracted me to the Shimano external battery was the chance that they would do a range of batteries with a common mount. The standard 504Wh, a large capacity battery and a lower capacity lightweight battery. Like WildGuy said, missed opportunity for people wanting to buy extra batteries.

Ah yeh, see what you mean. That would have given them a chance to sell a lot of extra batteries maybe to people who could upgrade too, though not me as mine uses the external battery internally. Wonder why they didn't do that then? Aesthetics?

Same with mine, sadly (Pivot Shuttle). Though I probably would have hacked it somehow and 3D printed a cover. I have no idea why they did this, other than to force manufacturers to redesign around the new connectors for some as-yet-unknown reason (perhaps new drive and control systems). Or to force a round of bike upgrades rather than just battery upgrades.
