Shimano e8000 mud behind cover

Hi guys

Does anyone have a fix for the very poor seal on the non driveside motor cover? Every ride in mud and the cover needs removing and cleaning as the electrical connections are full of mud and water

lots of us have put silicone sealant round the top.

Does this pretty much stop the problem?

Also I've got a 2017 levo, the shimano is on my new merida, so first time using shimano. Is it normal for the shimano motor to have a noticeable clunk when the motor engages? As the levo is super smooth engaging

I didn't have a problem at all until I fitted an extra piece of electronics inside the cover
after that the top of the cover bulged a little, i originally just used black tape electrical across the top but thought sealant was the neater better sealed solution.

Clunk sounds fairly normal, yeah, depends on your pedalling and which mode, eh?

Ha ha. I slightly modified the levo for the same reason. Not doing the merida just yet.

Tbf you don't really notice the clunk much when trail riding etc. But very noticeable on tarmac, The levo is super smooth. You never feel the motor engage, but I have to say I prefer the shimano for the way it delivers the power

Tape works for me across the top ,stood a lot of it but muck still get in there from behind the motor and the underside of the cover I’ve now siliconed Sealed the 3 conectors on top of the motor after having a few problems with dirt and dust getting in ,. I think all the little round push in connectors on the system need to considered service items and pulled out cleaned and greased etc regularly . I recently had to clean the same conectors in the display , it’s amazing how much muck gets thrown up at them but I never thought to do much with them before

I think I'll be doing the same with regards to the silicone. I'll seal the electrical contacts, then seal the top of the cover. That way I might only have to clean it every few rides and not after every wet ride. Can't believe shimano didn't improve on this.

I probably only clean it monthly now it’s not getting too dirty but with the connectors siliconed it doesn’t really matter

Did you just silicone the bare connectors or did you put a little around the other connectors too?

Same with the electrical tape method... first I removed it after a month and nothing, now I'm removing it every ~3 months and it's still not dirty. OK, I'm not in the UK but it still gets mud and washing it regularly...

I know other have, but i have never had any issue with crud getting in behind the motor covers on my Vitus, and i am not particular about conditions i ride in. I do think the siliconing is a good preventative measure either way

Me neither. I just wanted to close the gap as a pre-preventative measure and although most folk would never even notice it and I did a very neat job with the electrical tape. I still thought it looked shit taped. silicone (done well) is just far neater.

The speed sensor with the slot is the main problem , especially when it’s been replaced by the conector on the ‘device ‘
I think these little sensor connections take such tiny voltages that a little bit of muck brings up a fault code . The codes are never consistant , I used just clean them and it’s all good to go again but now I’ve siliconed around them as I popped them together .
The main conector at the front is no problem that seems to seal really well so I just grease that one
