just another thing to go wrong they need to make these things last and be serviceable and supply parts like controllers ect what we have now when it is out of warranty is throw it in the bin and buy a hole new motor.

like phones these corporations dont want you to fix anything anymore and just buy a new one every 24 months even if the bike cost 10k
I do get what you mean .i hate that as well ,i try to fix things or get thing fixed as much as poss, and i do think companies need to do more to keep parts serviceable for longer
but new tec will always keep coming out at a rate of knotts and i do like new tec and thought this looked interesting

well there are new smart frame batts for the smart system but even tho they will fit on my bike they will not work becouse they dont want them to via locked software and can bus signals.

all this new tech as you call it is just a even more locked down system via there software and gps tracking which imo will end all dongles if that fully happens.

when i got my bike id thought buy now id be able to more than double the capacity of my 400w batt but no i cant even recell it becouse of can bus bs let alone double the capactity in the same size case thats why you have the power tube batts with more 18650 cells.
So you dont want to see any new tec then ,just make old tec more upgradable ,you know thats just not going to happen
and as i said this just interested me and thought others might be interested as well

what new tech are you talking about ? they all still use 18650 batts the only difference is smart gps displays and can bus encrypted locked programming that you can not fix or get parts or even recell the batts as they will get bricked if you cut power to the bms.
auto shifting as in the vid i posted

When I read the provocative title, I was incredulous but open mined, imagining some kind of CVT contraption housed within the motor. That might be kind of cool. But after I watched the video, I was quite underwhelmed. They set up their electronic shifting so that the cadence remains in a certain range, while also considering input torque. That doesn't sound very amazing to me at all.

Frankly, I wouldn't be interested in such a system because I often pedal at abnormal cadences. Generally, I pedal at a lower cadence than what suggested in the "Mountain Biking for Dummies" books. My legs are strong, so I tend to pedal at a lower cadence to save my lungs. But if my leg muscles start to tire, I'll increase the cadence to give them a rest. On the flip side, if my lungs are ready to explode, I'll shift about three or four gears too tall, and stand on the pedals like I'm using the stair climber at the gym. It lets the lungs rest and fries the leg muscles in short order. So really, I don't want or need some fancy schmancy auto-shifter trying to second-guess what I require.

I've never heard of that SRAM contraption. I'm going to look it up after I click "post reply." But if it's based on a roller chain and sprockets, I won't be jumping for joy.

Looks like they've spent the time to think about it and set it up with enough ability to customise things that it could suit anyone.

The Vanmoof I rode had a 4 speed automatic shifter. In that case I didn't really like it, but it's a road bike and I was riding MTB trails on it. It was configured for too low a cadence range (which could be changed with the app) but it had no other sensors so wasn't very intuitive.

just another thing to go wrong
all this new tech

There is no new Tech. It's effectively just combining all the existing motor sensors with the existing di2 and adding some software in between to make the gear changes. The freeshift just spins the motor up in the equivalent of walk mode to move the chain along and move through the gears without the need to pedal. There's nothing new to go wrong (other than software errors) you can turn it off and return to manual.

Don't forget how much people like the idea of a clean cockpit. With this, assuming you can configure it to work the way you want, you can junk your shifters entirely - LESS things to break !

If it really does change on the fly and be in the right gear as you switch into a descent, the right gear as you switch into a climb. Who cares if you do it or it does it. You just want to be getting on with riding. Yes, it removes some of that purity and responsibility of you being in the right gear - but lets face it, how many times do you get to the bottom of a run or top of a climb and say "man, I did some sweet gear selections then, I wish you could have seen it".
