So getting hold of XT levers seems impossible at the moment due to supply chain issues. My plan is to just buy a full set of Maguras and swap the levers at some point in the future.

I've had confirmed that the calipers are the same, I'll be swapping the pads for Uberbike's anyhow so that leaves the levers. I've not been able to try the Magura levers due to covid so this is a semi blind purchase. It'll be the 1-finger lever style I'll want. I've read a whole bunch of reviews that state "there is more power with the MT7's due to a different mechanical ratio" - what on earth does that actually mean?!

Has anyone tried both the MT5 and MT7 levers? Whats your thoughts?

Are the MT7 levers really that much better that they cost over double the price of the MT5's?

Are modulation and power still really good with the MT5's?

I have had 3 sets of 5's on my analogue bikes and have 7 pro's on my Ebike. Power is the same and the modulation is still far superior to other brands, the lever on the 7's is much more confidence-inspiring than the 5's but that said, is it worth the extra......Hmmm, I think so but I'm not unhappy with the 5's.
I think if you go with the 5's you only need one finger anyway, just need to move the brake further inbound on the bars as the leaver is that much longer.

Before actually putting them to use, other than just bedding in the rotors, I pulled the Saint & MT7 combo off of my bike yesterday in favor of installing a full Magura setup. I’ve got the MT5 (Fabio edition) as well as the MT7 (Raceline) on hand and am leaning towards the MT5 for this build. This decision is mostly based on aesthetics. The Fabio edition brake features the same 1-finger lever blade profile as the MT7 so the difference appears to just be the lever body. My previous experience has only been with the MT7. The brakes aren’t setup yet, but if no one comments on the difference prior to when I get a chance, I’ll certainly let you know my thoughts between the two.

The two buddies I have running Shigura setups have either the new XT or XTR levers, not the older Saints levers. For what it’s worth.

Before committing to the project I had previously seen the Saint being used or the new XT. The Saint lever has plenty of power with the Magura caliper, it’s just that the pad contact is a bit early for me. I like a lot of lever pull and with the Saint it’s just a few millimeters too short prior to pad contact. I thought about trying the XT option after the Saint. Since the levers are now impossible to find I figure I’ll just go with what I already know and sell the Shigura setup.

I have the MT5 Fabio edition brakes I snapped a lever last year & have updated the levers from other bike to loic Bruni levers on the MT5, easy to bleed & the loic levers are great

I really like Loic Bruni levers as well. They came stock on my 2021 Spesh Levo S-Works but unfortunately the brake levers did not have tge adjustment knobs that allow you to dial in bite point. Had to order separately and well worth it! Really have my Magura MT7's dialed in and wouldn't change them. Absolutely love my Shigura set-up (Saint Levers/MT7 calipers) on my YT Decoy Elite. Scary stopping power on both set-ups, would give the edge on modulation to the Shigura's.

My concern with the Saint levers would be them having less modulation than the XT or XTR levers.

My current setup myself is the new XTR brakes with Galfer 220mm rotors front and rear with Galfer ebike brake pads and I love this setup. I ride allot of steep black and double black trails in the Vancouver Canada. I'm heavy too and 250lbs and I have zero issue with this setup.

But I will admit I've really been think about trying a TRP DH-R Evo golds or maybe even Hayes Dominion A4's just to see how they compare to what I have now.

Right! After an evening of buying various components from Merlin, Amazon, Ebay etc I think I’ve managed to cobble together a complete MT5 setup. (If anyone is interested, Amazon have MT5 caliper/lever sets complete per side new for £58 at the moment!)

Nearly.

Does anyone know which Magura Remotemix clamp would fit the Specialized CommandPost dropper (or any dropper) lever?

I’ve used the Magura ShiftMix clamps designed for SRAM with my Bontrager Line Elite and OneUp remotes. For the left hand dropper lever placement, my preference is to use the one they intend for the right hand; the offset works better for me based on my brake lever distance from the grip. Not sure what’s possible with the remote supplied from Specialized.

Thanks coregrind, I’ll grab one and give it a try cheers ?

I used standard sram shifter clamps each side. I never liked all the matchmaker stuff to share a single clamp.

Insert brake porn here ?

MT5s with 1-finger levers 220front/203rear, uberbike ebike race matrix pads, fitted today thanks to Berkshire Bikes who got the whole job done in under an hour!

Ended up buying all the components from different places thanks to the ongoing supply shortages.

Now to bed them in and keep hunting for XT Levers.

Cheers again all for your help ?

Minor update as quite a few people have asked how the power/modulation are with the Maguras.

This is in comparison to my old Code-R's with 200mm rotors front/rear and original sintered pads and Hope V4s with 203mm rotors front and rear.

Got chance to give the brakes a good bedding in this morning;

- Feels like 40%-50% more power than the Code-R's and 50%+ more power than my Hope V4's.

- Modulation is spot on, not grabby at all, but the power comes on fast and hard when you do pull harder.

- Its very easy to lock up the rear wheel now, I feel if I had gone with a 220mm rotor on the rear it would be like ski Sunday. Might change my mind though when lockdown has gone and Morzine trips can start again!

- I roughly measured braking distance between the Codes and the Maguras. Its fair to say it was halved with the Maguras. The brakes really test the tyre grip now where as with the Codes, the tyres had loads left to go before breaking traction.

- Uberbike and a few other places suggested 7-10 pulls to bed in the pads. I'd say more like 40-50. After 10 pulls the brakes were not as strong as the Codes but when I got to 30+ the brakes just got stronger and stronger. I doused the calipers with the water bottle every few pulls, its subjective to whether that does much. I've only covered 5 miles of singletrack and one blue trail DH run due to time constraints, so I doubt the brakes are bedded in properly yet.

- The brakes squeal like a piggy under braking when wet, much more 'howly' than the Codes.

- There is the reported pad rub every now and again that quite a few people report. I guess it's due to tolerances.

- The reach adjust (not bite point adjust) seems to wander. I set it at home then had to bring in the lever reach after a few runs. I think they may need bringing in again.

Cheers

I had Shimano XT , then Magura MT 5 , both very good then some SRAM level T crap .
I was flat out even pulling an endo with the SRAM brakes . Had to learn to pull the levers a lot further to stop .

Upgraded to Shigura . Stopping power magnified many fold . The rubbing pads are a constant maintenance issue though .
Subsequently had to learn not to pull the levers too hard on the Shigura after the SRAM crap experience .

Hi was just reading this thread and wandered why your front brake line is going around the outside of your fork leg ?

Not sure which is the correct placement tbh, Berkshire Bikes fitted it that way on both the Codes that came with the bike and the Maguras I had fitted afterwards. Haven’t had any adverse side effects to date, touch wood.

Been following this thread, according to Magura the MT5 and MT7 calipers are slightly different in the amount of space between the rotor and pad, and have a different feel, has anyone tried both and noticed any difference in feel, in theory using the MT5 with thicker 2.3mm rotors such as Hope or TRP may be a good idea ?

I have both, the MT7's have less leaver movement (pad travel) but whatever your disc width that will stay the same.

The gap is whatever you make it, its a dumb system. If I want the pads to sit closer to the discs you just pop the wheel out, pull the lever the desired amount, reset the caliper and bobs your mum's brother.

Ok cheers, I understand that concept of making the gap smaller but if I understand what Magura are saying is that if bleed with pistons fully retracted you would get a better pad clearance with the 5’s, meaning the 7’s will never be able to have as much clearance, they also claim this makes for a different lever feel between the two callipers
