Rockshox Deluxe R Noise....

Hi Guys

Had my first opportunity to setup my new Spectral ON:7 today since taking delivery on Monday. Whilst setting my sag I noticed a odd grinding noise from the Rockshox Deluxe R rear shock. If I weight and unweight the bike the noise occurs in the first part of its travel and stops approximately around the first sag line. Something is not right! Just want to confirm before contacting Canyon. Here is the video:

I read this because I too have a Rockshox Deluxe R on my Focus.

Sorry G-Bru, I turned up the volume to max on your clip and I couldn't hear anything untoward.

Are you sure it's the shock and not the mounting pivots? It would worth deflating the shock and removing it so you can lube the pivots. It won't take long and stranger things have been missed when assembling bikes. The worst that can happen is that you end up with lubed pivots!

Good shout Steve, pretty sure it’s the shock, but will remove it to confirm. Can’t hurt to check! Just itching to ride the damn thing. (first EMTB)! ?

My new rockshox deluxe select+ produces a similar grinding noise under the same circumstances as you described. Im just curious, did you fix this or what happened?

It’s simply the 2ml of Maxima 15w50 oil transferring between the positive and negative chambers of the shock. Rockshox confirmed this after contacting them.

Its a bit odd that oil transferring between chambers makes "an odd grinding noise". I've had squelching noises, but never grinding noises.

Depending on the speed you compress the shock, it can be interpreted as grinding... but yes, I agree Steve, that was a poor description, "squelching" is a better word.

If there is any doubt, I have since upgraded my Deluxe to a Super Deluxe with MegNeg air can. Same "squelching" noise as the Deluxe. I keep meaning to not fill the Shock with 2ml of oil whenever I service my shock at 50 hours, just as an experiment, but to be honest it does make sense that the cause of the squelching noise is the oil being shifted through that small transfer port.

I am considering the MegNeg change and I'm in research mode at the moment. So a few questions if you don't mind....?

Did you ride the Super Deluxe before fitting the MegNeg?
What problems did you have that you believed the MegNeg would improve?
Did you fit the MegNeg yourself, was it as easy as the vids make it look?
Have you got bottomless tokens fitted to the positive side as well as the rings in the negative side?
How long did it take you to find that combination, or did you just guess and go?
Does it live up to the billing?

Feel free to amplify any point.

Yes, 2019 Super Deluxe.

What problems did you have that you believed the MegNeg would improve?
As advertised, I was looking for a more linear feel. Without the MegNeg, I ended up with to many spacers to stop the shock from bottoming (I like doing jumps, sometimes badly...) but this also made the shock feel too harsh when riding the fast trails. The sensation of my feet bouncing off the pedals over harsh terrain (tree roots and rocks) was disconcerting.

Very easy, no specialist tools required, apart from a strap lock if you have a particularly tight air can.

Have you got bottomless tokens fitted to the positive side as well as the rings in the negative side?
Yes, 1 token on the positive (instead of 1 token + GNAR token) and ran 4 bands, but have now settled with 3. This is all down to rider preference, factors like bike weight, rider weight, riding style and type of riding all have to be considered. Just experiment with them to see what works best for you.

How long did it take you to find that combination, or did you just guess and go?
I was happy with 4 bands for a while, then decided to remove a band and the ride felt better, offering slightly more mid stroke support, I am going to try remove another band to see what effect it has.

Does it live up to the billing?
Yes, the Meg Neg for the shock pretty much does what a Luftkappe or Debonair air spring does for a fork. No more blowing through all my travel when riding off drops or coming up short on jumps and overall trail riding is much better too as it is nice and plush off the bottom.
