Riding : How wet is too wet ?

For the last few months here, it's pretty much rained constantly. There's lots of flooding .. it's WET ! On top of that, it's been windy too, so there's lots of trees down.

A lot of the decent downhill tracks are either blocked or washed out or are just torrents of water so you can't see where you're going anyway.

When I got the Kenevo, knowing Specialized has a bit of a reputation for poor wet weather reliability, I thought I'd try and keep it to mainly dry weather use. With the desire to still go and ride, even if I can't ride my normal trails, that's gone out of the window with it being endless rain and amazingly .. though I'm not sure how .. it still works and hasn't let me down.

Obviously, electrics and water don't go together. Most brands seem to have some problems mentioned at some point on here with water issues. Theoretically, the bikes are rain and splash proof and are sealed to some degree, so it's interesting to know who pushes theirs to what extent and what problems they have, or if they don't have problems ?

I think we've all become terrified of our bikes stopping working if a drop of dew should flick up and touch the bike, but maybe we're being overly paranoid ? Yes, unsealed Spesh TCU's are a design fault and need taping, and the battery/motor cable on the 2.1 brose Spesh bikes have moisture problems, but only when the cable splits on the bend.

My last 400k have been either in heavy rain, torrential rain, mud, puddles and at times, not far off snorkelling ..

Yesterday's ride, a quick 30k loop .. I tried to stick to where I thought it would be safer/drier ?! With all the storms the night before, plenty of places were still submerged ..

This is normally a pleasant lane .. yesterday I was battling to not get washed away sideways on the bend.

The towpath ... uhmmm .. I actually had to abort in the end on this section for various reasons, the depth continued to increase a few hundred meters up, rapidly unfortunately, so I got a lot more submerged than intended (knee depth for a few seconds as I leapt off and lifted bike and headed back on foot out of the deep bit). With the edges well underwater, you couldn't gauge upcoming depth, and more worryingly where the canal was, where the ditch was and where the tow path was ..

So most of the ride was like this ... or worse.

Did the last 10k uphill in turbo to get the motor/battery as warm as possible.

Washed and leaf blew the bike. Tipped it every way for drainage, left it another half hour then put it on charge till full (to heat the battery and hopefully steam out any moisture ?) The Rosenberger connection was full of water when I disconnected to charge, so had to blow and dry that out and the plug housing was full of water - Not quite sure how it was still working ..

Then brought it in the house overnight to dry everything as much as possible ..

Fortunately ... still all working properly today ! :)

Wetter and muddier the better; I have a Levo-19 and have never had a wet weather orientated issues so all good
I find the wet/ mud better for skill development- your (my) reactions have to be sharper with all those slippy roots and cambers (Surrey Hills- specifically "Redlands") which are very steep and actually puts most non eBike riders off, so its a great venue for ebikes

My understanding is the Shimano motor is splash-proof. I won't ride any track that does more than that. The motors are too expensive to replace w/o warranty and warranty work takes a longggggggggg time to process.

The problem is, I think it's cumulative exposure to wet that does the damage.
There are circuit boards inside the motor, and I think moisture gets in and gradually over time corrosion forms on the board and then it stops working properly.
I have rarely seen them break down due to moisture in the ride.
But your right, in the UK you would have to put the bike away till April for the next dry ride!
Every time I come home after a filthy ride and I'm hosing my clothes down before I can even take them inside, I say that's it never again, then 2 days later I repeat ?

Wow that canal though! I thought we’d had some rain.
I’ve had some pretty atrocious days in the saddle on my levo 18, over 3000 miles on latest batt/motor.
After early problems I was worried, but since spec sorted my bike I’ve been very impressed. I’m truly mad for it, denied my bikes for years with injury. I’m hugely enthusiastic and weather is irrelevant to me in the grip of this renewed obsession.
I wash it with a hose, brush and muc off. I apply the after wash silicone spray stuff with a cloth. pretty confident in her now to be fair. I have no motor vehicle for backup either.

Need some advice. My mate did some research into different bikes and in the end gave up as dealers told him basically why cant ride them in the wet ie the ridgeway in winter. What is the collective wisdom and experience ref water ingress to motor and is any one brand worse than others?

I have not had any issues with water whilst riding. As R120 states avoid submerging the motor in water filled ruts etc. Heavy rain and mud haven't caused any issues. I did have an issue when I first washed it but that was probably a combination of a loose connection and over vigorous hosing when upside down. After ride maintenance is key. Just leaving the bike in a damp state after a wet ride will result in issues. Wash it, dry it off, lube it up and ideally store it where it continues to dry out. With a common sense approach e bikes and wet conditions shouldn't be a problem. The levo will not start if it senses a short but I think it won't cut out during a ride.

I ride in water just below the motor. No problems on my Trance.
The wifes Cube is a different story. Motor had to replaced after water ingress.

In this bad UK wet weather at the moment, I duck tape a small piece of black tape over the rubber on off switch, seen a video of water getting in there, totally cover the battery connector and filled the small gap where the cable enters the motor casing with silicon sealant. Last year I noticed crap was getting in there at that point. Good wash and lube after every ride and going strong, 2018 Levo 3500 miles 1 new battery last month.

Another good reason for avoiding the canal would be where it may have breached the bank and me more than a few inches deep but you can't see the bottom. I ride in dorset and it's very hard to tell the depth of puddles on clay and chalk tracks with horses and tractors!

There are 2 ingress points on the Specilized bikes,.. the left side and, the right side.
In saying that, any sealed component that is hot, and then dunked in cold water will cause a vacuum and suck water in past the seals unless there is a breather fitted and that breather is above water level. This is a fault with all these ebike motors ?‍♂️
The drive side of the Brose motor tends to hold onto moisture in the small gap between the inner and outer shaft. Another design fault. ?‍♂️ Other manufactures have a larger gap between the shafts that doesn’t allow moisture to linger, but rather, drain from this area a lot quicker. It’s also a great area for dirt and grit to gather and wear away at the lip of the seal with each rotation.

You are going to run into problems with moisture in the motor at some point. It will start with a little roughness in the bearings that will turn into a little play, before it all explodes. Specialised have a good warranty in place, with 2 years on the motor. Because the motor is an un serviceable item for the first 15000km, it covers the bearings and motors are replaced rather than repaired. So before your warranty is up, check it over and if crook, get a replacement and this will start the whole 2 year warranty cover for the motor all over again ? so in reality, it’s worth trashing the motor within 2 years, as you get a new one and you don’t have to worry about belt replacement at the 15000km mark. Feck, we pay a premium for the Specialized product, so we may as well cash in ?‍♂️.
So @Zimmerframe, as you can see, in this situation, any wet, is too wet, if you want to avoid damage to the motor. But,. Your bike will get wet, unless you are in a dry climate and never wash it. There are precautions you can take to limit the exposure, taking the design faults into consideration, but it will happen. So you may as well get the thing wet, within reason, and cash in on the warranty, rather than baby it and have it fail after the warranty. So embrace and enjoy the wet rides, which will make the dry rides even better.
And to anyone who did not buy a Specialized, yeah, your screwed ?‍♂️ Unless you too have great warranty backup, but you’ll never know really, unless you test it ?
