Replacement parts for DU-E7000 motor

Hey guys,

The DU-E7000 motor on my BMC Trailfox AMP decided to stop working - was making a grinding sound and i had no assist in any modes. Since I do not have warranty and against Shimano's better judgement I decided to open the motor. There i found a plastic cog connecting the cranks to the clutch (i guess) was broken.

This is the broken part which should look like this:

Does anyone know if i can find this part in another motor model (i found some E5000, E6000 and E6102 motors for sale for decent sums) or if there is any way to get a replacement part somehow?

I have a friend who has broken that piece 3 times in under a year. It's just not strong enough for the strain put on the motor. You probably won't find too many people complaining about it yet, because Shimano covers it under warranty and almost all E7000s are under warranty right now.

I wouldn't spend a bunch of money to replace it, because you'll probably just break it again. Hopefully someone will eventually make a stronger replacement part. The demand will probably be there, once everyone's warranty time is up.

Did you find any solution for this problem ? MY E7000 die for same reason. its still under warranty and it will be changed,
but i belive if its fail once it will fail again. Do you have any more pictures of the motor ?=

Ive had this exact problem happen to me twice now but i cant seem to fin the replacement part anywhere, did you manage to find the replacement part and if you did could you please tell me where u got it from?

I got the part from The home of ebike motor parts - - they had a broken E7000 with this part intact so i guess i was lucky. No problems since but i guess it is a matter of time until it will break again

Mine too.

I am amazed these motors were not recalled. The engineering on the gear set that breaks is bad. Not built to do the job it needs to. The gear set that it mates with is beautifully made. As it should be.

Good on Shimano for replacing motors under warranty. However, the time will be up soon for many people. The gears will break and will have to be fixed. Because mine was out of warranty, I had no issue pulling the motor apart. Nothing to lose.

I have a fix in mind as soon as I can jump on a lathe.

In Australia and possibly elsewhere, it is Shimano policy to not offer parts for their motor. That's fine when motors are being replaced under warranty but that's not ok when they enter the second hand market.

The gear that broke is not Fit for purpose. I don't want to be buying a motor when it breaks. It is so straightforward and easy to open up to replace this gear. I am sure there are other very complex aspects of this motor that people could not repair without a great deal of electrical expertise. For me bracing this broken plastic gear was pretty straightforward. I have access to a few tools that most people would not have. I would hope there's someone out there who could make a repair kit or better still a replacement gear set of a quality consistent with the next gear in the system.

I'm pretty sure it's against consumer law to not offer parts for something particularly when it's questionably constructed as this is.

There must be a lot of motors broken like mine and the others I have read about. All those with this gear broken are reasonably easily fixed. Shimano needs to make parts available to do this simple fix.

Hi, Thanks for posting this solution as I have exactly the same issue and this solution will save a lot of money. I too have a second hand bike and despite being with the 2 year warranty, they will not honour. Poor form in my mind. Not even an offer of a cost only replacement or something.
I have just opened the casing up and it is identical to yours. I can see what you have done to join the collars to the original gear but how have you joined the two collars to the shaft? I assume they have to be pressed somehow so not to rotate on the geared shaft?
I live on the Central Coast of NSW so not far away from yourself.
Possible to get a bit more detail on the fix?

That's awesome. I need to do that. I haven't taken my motor apart, but I'm sure that's what's wrong. It still functions in Eco, but it's loud and makes a terrible clacking noise under load. It just makes the noise in trail or boost.

Do you have any suggestions? Did you lathe that piece from scratch?

We are preparing a solution for the plastic gear that is part of motor E7000 and which has been having significant problems due to the material being made from a weak plastic that can snap under extreme force. As Shimano themselves do not supply this gear as a spear part, the only option left is to buy a completely new motor. I have come up with a solution that is currently undergoing vigorous tests. Production, sales and service will be launched at the beginning of 2024. It looks like Shimano intentionally made a failure point with a reduced thickness of the material connecting the 2 sections of the gear assembly. If noise and weight are an issue with a metal gear, perhaps use machined technopolymer material that increases the thickness of this transition, and the new part readily available online (amazon, ebay, aliexpress etc) with an instruction video online as well.

the plastic gear just failed on my bike recently and looking into this solution.
question: what is the purpose of the small allen screw drilled between plastic and metal? Is it to stop the gear slipping on its shaft? Thanks

The solution for the faulty Shimano motors E7000 is finally here!

The solution for the plastic gear that is part of motor E7000 and which has been having significant problems due to the material being made from a weak plastic that can snap under extreme force is now ready for purchase. As Shimano themselves do not supply this gear as a spear part, the only option left is to buy a completely new motor. I have come up with a solution that has now passed all the vigorous tests and is ready for sale in two variants. Plastic and Dural.

Finally got the bike on the road again. Gear fixed as per this blog ideas. Also added four 3mm grub screws to prevent from slipping along the gear main shaft (machining cost me 50 euros in Athens, Greece). The three screws holding the plates together are 3mm, not 5mm as in the diagram.
