• Warning!!

Riding a tuned or deristricted EMTB is not a trivial offence and can have serious legal consequences. Also, many manufacturers can detect the use of a tuning device or deristricting method and may decline a repair under warranty if it was modified from the intended original specification. Deristricting EMTB's can also add increased loads for motors and batteries. Riding above the local law limit may reclassify the bike as a low-powered bike, requiring insurance, registration and a number plate.

Be aware of your local country laws. Many laws prohibit use of modified EMTB's. It is your responsibility to check local laws. Ignoring it, has potential implications to trail access, and risk of prosecution in the event of an accident.

Let's discuss on the Red Ped 2 tuning device. It seems to have features that normal (Volspeed, Speedbox) style tuning boxes dont' have.

The functionalities seems to be somewhat same kind that the current Kiox offers with Bosch Ebikeconnect. One could say that it's like the Ebikeconnect done right. Torque and watts are maybe the most interesting data fields:

1: Name of the module
2: Unique address of the module
3: Maximum speed: Reset by a long tap
4: Time travelled
5: Average speed: Reset by long tap
6: Crank turns per minute
7: Current motor support level
8: Current battery power in watts
9: Driver torque at the crank
10: Current speed: Reset all values by a long tap
11: Battery level in percent
12: Driver power in watts
13: RedPed calculated range
14: Driver KCAL
15: Daily distance: Reset by a long tap
16: Current tuning status
17: Total distance: Adjustable by a long tap
18: (Theoretical) Maximum final speed when tuning is active (for setting see instructions)
19: Tuning gets activated when the E Bike is switched on
20: Tuning is activated until the E Bike is switched off
21: Tuning activation via walk button (0 to 4 times)
22: Tuning activation via the light button (0 to 4 times)
23: Tuning activation by switching back and forth to turbo mode (0 to 4 times)
24: Tuning Activation by switching back and forth to the Off mode (0 to 4 times)
25: Counter that counts how often the Walk key was pressed, turns green when the set number is reached, there is a separate counter for 21 to 24.
26: Average crank turns per minute
27: Maximum crank revolutions per minute
28: Battery percent per km, averaged over the last 10km
29: Current battery percentage per km
30: Battery watt-hours per km
31: Average battery watt-hours per km
32: Average battery power in watts
33: Maximum battery power in watts
34: Current torque at the crank in Nm
35: Average torque at the crank in Nm
36: Maximum torque at the crank in Nm
37: Current driver performance in watts
38: Average driver performance in watts
39: Maximum driver power in watts
40: Battery cycles: Reset by a long tap
41: See instructions
42: Wheel circumference in cm or wheel diameter in inches
43,44: See instructions
45: Module name: Maximum 9 characters long

Price is 199 EUR which seem to at same level that everyting else

Anyone using?

Hello Hamina,

I'll get my Cube Kathmandu Hybrid one 625 in a few weeks and looking to deristricted it. I also saw the red ped 2 option and wondering if someone on the forum has some experience with it? As you're saying it could provide similar functionalities as Bosch Ebikeconnect like a "lock" functionality.

I have the redped 2 in my yamaha pw-st powered Haibike. I haven't used the bike much yet due to health problems but I have tested it and it works. Did try completely de-restricted and now I have it set to 32km/h. If there is something you would like to know about it I can try and check/test it.

How is the app and Bluetooth connection with the dongle? Does it connect fast and reliable? I'm also thinking about +-30 km/h.

It seems pretty reliable. Takes about 5-10s to connect when i tested it. I do have an issue tho but I am not sure it's the dongle that causes it. The range it displays on the yamaha display (also in the app) won't change when I change mode. With 90% battery it displays 42km range. When I turn the bike on it shows 87km for a sec and then goes to 42km.

Just got a confirmation from the EBT team that it shows the estimated range with tuning on. If i turn tuning off it shows the normal range. So range display works as intended.

Hi Illusmare,
Got the same ride a couple of days ago & came across the redped 3, really interesting features like the charge cycle stats and tracking.
I have a couple of queries if you wouldn't mind, everything seems to be in kph from what I've read... I've changed my display to mph, with the redped kicked in will I still get speed/range etc in mph?
Also, again with the tuning on, are all the modes apart from ASM still available and work as normal?
