Unanswered Rear shock mounting position?

I am hoping someone far more learned than I can answer this question. Does it really matter which way the rear shock is mounted? If a bike came from the factory with the Air Can mounted up near the top tube and the bottom near the seat tube, can you in theory switch it around? Will that mess the shock up or ruin the way it performs? The reason I am asking is my rear shock has the piggyback air can and if I could just turn it upside down it would alleviate a space issue I may encounter in the future if I go with Shimano's new 630wh external mount battery. Thanks in advance for any clarity given to my dilemma that I don't have just yet.

I have that same problem with a DVO Topaz T3. Just to be certain, I emailed one of the design technicians and he said that the shock will work in any orientation. I have seen so many shocks mounted "upside down" that I assumed that was what his answer would be, but it never hurts to confirm it.
PS: I don't have the Topaz yet, I would if there were any in the country, just waiting, and waiting, and w....

No. A shock can be orientated at any angle and it should not affect function at all. What you need to check is clearance from frame parts throughout full suspension cycle. To make sure the piggy back or adjusters do not make contact when mounted in the opposite direction
