Managed a wee bike run today at the Monster trails near Fochabers . Dry tracks most of my ride, 17 miles turbo all the way. But it only takes a couple of wet miles and you and the bike are clartit with mud once again . Away to get the nosebag on now for a Mother's day dinner.

Visited there while a group of us were staying for a week long mtb trip ( minus the "e" )in Ballater back in June 2019 ..probably the wettest / dirtiest I've ever been after a ride ..but great trails

Yes 6 miles from me they are OK nothing horrendous . It can get muddy right enough . They shut the Gully Moster trail but there is a shortish twisty bit with berms now . Wee bike park at the main car park as well not sure if you would have seen that back then . Lot of youngsters use that.

No the trails generally aren't marked. There are a lot of paths along the East side with ad-hoc downhill techie bits - best look at heat maps on Strava TBH. Beware it's very busy with walkers at weekends to the point where I don't bother, particularly on any sunny days, and on the path along the top. Parking on the hills is £5 but if you start at either end lower down there's plenty of free roadsideside parking. I generally start at Hollybush and ride N to Worcester beacon and back, doing a mixture of easy level paths and techie downhills, then use the paths to climb back up.

I'll be riding there Wednesday if you want to tag along.

Everything should be sign posted for us older lads . Trail forks etc I just won't put the effort in to work out the routes . I would need a 36 inch screen with me out on the trail to be able to see the trails.

Thanks for the info, I’ll have a look. I’ve been up there walking but that was years ago so can’t remember much about the area. Can’t do Wednesdays , but maybe I’ll give you a shout later in the year, would like to have a look round up there

I can see that bike becoming popular. I sold my Cervélo gravel years ago but a Gravel bike with a Fauza or TQ would be nice.

May need a spare battery I fancy doing some touring again only 250wh . Takes panniers that was a bonus. I think it will fit the wife then I really will get a gold star.

The trails are drying up again as it was 18 degrees here yesterday. There is still some snow on the upper trails but I was able to get out an test my shorten cranks (150mm) on some of the more questionable locations.

But dark green moss on rock is REALLY slick!

I was a little apprehensive of getting so close to them, their horns look sharp!
The tree had taken down part off the fence but was still managing to keep them in.
Thankfully they seemed friendly enough

Sadly a lot of trees are falling or being felled in this area, (Chanctonbury ring) does anyone know why? Dutch elm disease or something?

It has opened up a lot of the old trails though.

These ones get out in summer and have 8 miles of road to leisurely feed wherever they please about 20 of them. Wary if I am on bike all single track road . They absolutely love wing mirrors and good luck getting their insurance details off them.

Wonderful. The raw, beautifully rugged Scottish landscape and random roaming wildlife is so refreshing to see after the predominantly concrete jungles and angry, packed in people of down south.

That's probably in the top ten worst single track roads in Scotland . Unclassified Road going to Kinloch Hourn 22 miles the last few mile horrendous.

Looks amazing on Google maps, the tea room at Lochhournhead looks like a nice stop to refresh too! Shame it's 560 miles away from me

Not much cycling there , well one I did many moons ago thats good but too long for an Ebike. Walking hills and padding a kayak it's awesome on loch Hourn. Yes fair journey that .
