Orbea Rise Gen 0 Carbon - Faulty battery - anything we can try?

Hello all, we have 2x Gen 0 Carbon Rise in the house. They've not been ridden for a couple of months until today, but were ok last time we rode them. Went to ride today and one of them would not switch on, meaning my partner had to ride my 'spare' eBike (Turbo Levo) whilst my Rise was fine.

After the ride I dropped the motor on the faulty bike hoping to find a dodgy connection. No joy. Took the battery out and pressed the button on the LEDs and the first and last LED flashed. Looking at the manual, this is a 'permanent error code' which means the battery is now kaput...

As the batteries are expensive, I took my battery out and put it into my Partners Rise and it all started OK, so definitely a faulty battery. Battery also doesn't want to charge when out, which it should (again, checked with my 'good' battery - all ok).

Q: Is there any way we can recover/recondition/repair the faulty battery, or do we just have to bite the bullet and buy a new one (at £530!!)?

TIA, Richard and Emily.

Hi,
Battery is expensive, but, I've had to wait 9 months for Orbea to stock a replacement battery on my Gen0 M Ltd

My advice, they are in stock, get one now.

My local LTB lent me a bike for a month whilst waiting but in the end I opted to get a new bike

I bought a M20 23 model which was heavily discounted (33% and half the price of my LTD) and I got my LTB to swap all stuff over.

I will end up with two bikes but this is the problem we are going to see going forward, albeit a nice problem to have.

In three or four years will Orbea even stock Gen0 batteries ?.... its probably the same for other makes also.

We’ve ordered the same from the same shop. Still expensive though!
Yep, I was quoted £450 nine months ago and now they are £528

Now new bike in shop with battery motor connection issue. Only done 800km in 6 months but thankfully under warranty

I think it just needs ctrl-alt-del restart but the battery needs disconnecting from the motor, cleaning and reassembling.
Something I am not willing to attempt.

It never rains....

The battery pack will be constructed from multiples of either 18650, 21700, or flat-pack prismatic cells in series/parallel configuration. If any of the cells in the pack have failed due to deep discharge, then the BMS, if working properly, will leave the faulty circuit open because trying to charge it could lead to thermal runaway on cells that have high internal resistance. Troubleshooting will require the battery case to be opened so the cells can be measured with a multi meter (each one should test to have a voltage >3V). If any bad cells are found, they need to be replaced, which usually involves spot welding a new replacement into the same position*. If however every cell in the pack is up to spec, then the problem is the BMS itself and replacement of the BMS is required. A new BMS can be affordable, but the sellers of same if on Ali or Amazon, need to be vetted for reliability as there are reports of sketchy BMS's being shipped by some. The best place to vet sellers of BMS's would be forums such as BudgetLightForum, etc. *The replacement cell(s) need to be the same spec as the originals, and the pack has to be successfully balanced charged before being placed back into service.

It is possible that the pack has discharged below the voltage the BMS will allow charging. To remedy this you you can "jump start" the pack. First off let me say that what follows is a common, but still a "Black Diamond" level technique.

First, you will need access to the output of the cells. Most BMSs allow access using the output connector, but with others you will need to open the case to access the connections from the cells to the BMS. Directly measure the pack voltage. If it appears low (like <30 volts for a 36v pack), attach a charger or power supply directly. Charging only a relatively short time will bring the pack up to a voltage where the BMS will allow charging. You can then finish normal charging using the regular charger thru the regular charge port.
If the voltage is not low, there is something else wrong with the pack.

Good news, both now working.

I will have a spare one when the other one is in the shop.

What did you do to fix?
New bike, LBS dropped the motor, disconnected everything , cleaned all the contacts, reassembled and cleared the error log.
Quick test ride and no errors.
Time will tell if this as cured the error but this is still under warranty

The old bike started first time when new battery installed. Dropper has seized though and estimated cost of service/repair (Fox Transfer) was uneconomical so I have replaced with a cheaper option.
