Hi,

I have configured the eBike data screen on my Garmin Edge 1040, but would like to see the current Gear indicator from my XT Di2.
Anyone knows how to add this ebike gear field, or any Connect IQ app that can do that ?

I cut and pasted your query into ChatGPT and got this: (I have no idea whether it is a good answer or not, but everything from here to the end of this post is the ChatGPT response).

To display your current gear selection from your Shimano XT Di2 system on your Garmin Edge 1040, you can utilize the built-in data fields designed for electronic shifting systems. Here's how to set it up:

  1. Pair Your Di2 System with the Edge 1040:
    • Ensure your Di2 system is properly paired with your Edge 1040.
    • Navigate to Settings > Sensors > Add Sensor, and select your Di2 system from the list.
  2. Configure Gear Data Fields:
    • Go to Settings > Activity Profiles, and choose the profile you wish to customize.
    • Select Data Screens, choose the screen to modify, and then select a data field to change.
    • In the data field options, navigate to the Gears category.
    • Select the desired gear data field, such as Front Gear, Rear Gear, or Gear Combo, to display your current gear information.
These built-in data fields should provide real-time gear information directly on your device.

If you prefer a different display format or additional features, you can explore third-party data fields available through Garmin's Connect IQ Store. Here are some options:

Di2 Gears
A basic display of gear selection, showing the current front and rear gear combination. It also supports Synchro Shift, indicating the rear cassette gear before a front chainring shift occurs.

Ultimate Pro Cycling Data Field
A comprehensive data field displaying various metrics for riding, training, or racing with a power meter. It includes gear information among other cycling metrics.

To install a Connect IQ data field:

  1. Download and Install:
    • Using the Garmin Connect app or Garmin Express on your computer, search for the desired data field in the Connect IQ Store and install it to your Edge 1040.
  2. Enable the Data Field:
    • On your Edge 1040, navigate to Settings > Activity Profiles, select the profile to customize, and go to Data Screens.
    • Choose a screen and select a data field to change.
    • Scroll to the Connect IQ category and select the installed data field.
For detailed instructions on enabling a data field downloaded from Connect IQ, refer to Garmin's support page.

By following these steps, you should be able to view your current gear selection from your XT Di2 system on your Garmin Edge 1040.

I already checked ChatGPT before, the problem is that the XT Di2 is not recognized as a seperate sensor when connecting to the Edge. The Edge has only one sensor, and that is Shimano Steps, which includes all data like eBike battery, range, assist level, but the Gear field is not available..

In the mean time, I managed to configure the third switch on the XT Di2 shifter, and set it to 'D-Fly channel A' via the E-TUBE app. Then on the Garmin Edge, I configured the STEPS sensor so that 'D-Fly Channel A' does 'Next Page'.

So now I can use this third switch to scroll thru the different data screens on my Edge, which is already a small win instead of swiping thru the screens on the Edge itself.

I tried it, and was partially successful.
It now shows the di2 rear gear on the data screens where I enabled Connect/IQ data fields: My Edge 2 & MapDashboard

So that is already a big win !

Not sure what data electronic shifters provide but for non electronic I’ve been using the AK MTB Gear data field you can get from the connectIQ store. I use it on the 11 speed Linkglide on my 23 Rise and on the 12 speed Hyperglide on my 21 Giant Trance. It uses cadence and speed sensor data to calculate the gear you’re in quite accurately once you set it up.
