Hi all, I'm a noob, but with many years of experience, I'll be 60 next January and have ridden bikes all my life. Following a big motorcycle accident in the mid 80's, I didn't have a lot of choice of what I could ride, due to the seriousness of my injuries, so, I chose the MTB, as the gearing was lower and easier for me to maintain balance and build up my endurance/stamina.
The recuperation was long and arduous, many hours spent in the saddle, building up the longer rides, faster and more often. I was enjoying myself immensely, 2008 started badly for me, another accident left me with another life limiting disability, a fall at work, damaged my back, at the time, it was seen as a muscular/ligament/nerve issue. After 2 years of rehab, my doctors and specialists decided nothing more could be done and I was more or less, left to my own devices, pain killers, arthritic drugs, anti-depressants and a few pain management courses were all I had and nothing really worked for me. I dug deep, very deep and got back to what I know, cycling. I sold items from my other hobbies and treat myself to a nice road bike and had the gearing altered, I loved it, every other day, I was out there, road bike one day, MTB two days later, as the days went by, the miles built up and eventually, I managed a 50 miler, but my success was short lived, the stress I was putting myself under, plus the problems with medication, my ex thieving from me and taking the best part of £40,000 of my compensation, savings and pension fund, I took ill, I had a seizure in front of my doctor, 20 minutes later, I was in UHND (hospital in Durham City, UK), hooked up to every device available, tests were ran, blood samples taken, you name it, I had it done to me. I was monitored all night and the next day, I had no clue as to where I was or who I was, family came and went, I knew no-one. The following night at 6pm, I had another seizure, it was all hands to the deck again, me, I was blissfully unaware of what was going on.
Eventually, I was diagnosed with very high BP and arteriosclerosis, plus, I'd suffered a bleed on the brain, possibly triggered by the huge amount of stress I was under, plus, things that had happened to me that I either can't remember or my brain had blocked out.
Neither I, my doctors, neurologist or the man on the moon know how I've survived, but I have and I put it down to my DILLIGAF sense of humour.
But, I'm still here and will be asking for some advice over the next few days.
Apart from that, hello.
