Following the instructions in my welcome e-mail.

So hello all. I’m Gareth.

I bought an ebike back in May2021.

1. To help get me back in to cycling. 2. To hopefully have some fun and 3. To allow me to access remote hills with ease and cut down the distance on long hill walks – I’m a bit of a hill bagger – but I have my limits in terms of distance and ascent, so the ebike can really help.

I bought a Cube 140 Action Team. Was far fancier than what I had in mind, but it was all that was available at the time (serious supply issues back in 2021) but I had access to a cycle to work scheme so I went for it. And yes I’ve actually used it quite a bit to get to work and back.

Sadly I call my bike the money pit, I love the bike but have not been particularly lucky with it in some respects – you could say I’m on a steep painful learning curve. So signing up here as it looks like a good place to learn and share knowledge.

Cheers,
Gareth.

@Gareth why do you say it’s a money pit?? What sort of issues have you had??
I’m considering getting an e-bike but I’m still researching and cube bikes look solid.
Any feedback would help

Hello alkis,

The first thing I would say is I suspect your big brand emtbs are probably all a much of a muchness in terms of quality. In other words, I don’t think Cube is any better or any worse than any other bike brand. What Cube does offer is great value for money.

First issue I had was the charging socket, that was faulty from new and quickly sorted under warranty. So no cost there.

Next thing to fail was the headset. Bearings are generally not covered by warranty. So had a Hope headset fitted and the cables re-routed out of the headset and into the frame (Cube is sadly all down the headset now).

Things generally went well for a period of time. Usual consumables over about 3800 miles – It is running its 5th chain on its second cassette (they’ll need replacing very soon). On its second set of tyres and will need a new rear shortly. A couple of sets of brake pads. That in itself adds up to a pretty wee sum.

Did break a hanger and smash a derailleur along the way – these things will happen.

So took it too bike shop last September due to strange creaking noises. So that was a big hit – front and rear suspension service. Front wheel bearings and a Hope hub for the rear (the OE hub was a wreck). Every pivot bearing was replaced. New gear cable inner/outer. Brakes bled.

The motor failed after 3600 miles – water ingress. It was a basket case. Bought a reconditioned motor and it lasted just over 200 miles before failing – water ingress – good will repair and now refitted.

I think that is most of it. It has been used and abused and I live in one of the wettest counties in the world which does not help.

See my other thread for my frame issue – which is not a reliability issue but a real pain in the arse and a result of the bike shop giving me the wrong torque figure.

I am addicted to it, it is fantastic. Probably going to buy another, but I need to find was of keeping the cost of running them down a good bit.
