I’m totally new to cycling, no idea what I’m doing so excuse the newbie questions!

I need something that fits, that I can buy online and keeps atleast some of the filth off me from riding in puddles!

Has anyone any experience?

Very true. But there is nothing worse than getting an eye full of muddy puddle when you are on it on a trail. You could wear shades / glasses but they are so hit and miss, due to being too dark, not dark enough or steam up ?

Cool thanks for that. I don’t think they look bad! Just a practical accessory when you need to look neat when you arrive, the weight is obviously negligible and I like the idea of customising things to make the bike your own :)

I have a specialised fsr levo 27,5 .LBS fitted a short fat mudguard to the front & it works. no spray in the face if I hit water. but no Gard on rear so get mud spots on my back. ( not a lot of rain here ).

I’ve got these on my bike as I had the same problem, Topeak DeFender XC1/XC11 Set - For MTB 29inch. They do look a bit silly. But work well. They will be coming of in April.

These look really great to me to be honest, I’ve bought some mucky nuts things but I’m not too impressed so far. Missing screw for one on the rear fender :)

So I’m not doing too well with these mudguards.

The muckynutz just never fitted properly or stayed out so they are going back.

The Topeak fitted better, but not great AND when I caught the rear one on my bag today after 4 rides, it snapped so they are going back as badly designed as well :(

Any further suggestions my knowledgable forumites?! ?

Actually both TBH.

The topeak rear was the one that snapped, although until then it seemed to be doing ok (maybe mine had a manufacturing flaw). The front Topeak is also good, although too close to the battery really where it rubs.

The mucky nuts were just terrible. So flimsy they never sat true, and they missed a plastic bolt in the box so they weren’t ever going to sit well. Their customer services pretty much accused me of losing the screw as well (I didn’t....) so they rubbed me up the wrong way a bit!

I use the Decathlon copies of the Muckynutz front guard on front and rear of the bike. I also tried the rear guard that fits under the saddle which was ok on my commuter MTB but bloody useless offroad because it kept moving on the jumps.
I've pretty much resigned myself to getting muddy, but then I'm mountain biking not commuting so I don't mind.

For off road - they can and will come off no problem. For the commute to work, I need to be clean :)

+Very sturdy.
+Fits to seat stays
+Doesn't move sideways
+Moves with suspension so never hits tyre
+sits closer to rear wheel better protection

- Looks not everyone's taste
- Pricey

So - I've been through 3 different mudguards now!

Muckynutz - frankly the worst of the lot by a long way. The rear fender was way too short and the fixing mechanism, velcro was just plain crap. It never sat and stayed above the wheel.

Topeak - the front the front fender didn't play well with the battery and the rear fender just snapped with a small amount of pressure when my bag caught it. Not sure if it was a manufacturing problem or just bad design. Either way it went back.

Mudhugger. Pain in the ass to fit, needed extensions, at £10 each for front and back to work with 29" wheels, however they haven't snapped, don't snag any other part of the bike and appear to actually work.

So my advice is if you are looking for mud protection that actually works and doesn't break or fall off - Mudhuggers.

Mudhugger 29er on rear is best option I have found , i used mine on the demmo Levo I had with 2.8 tyres and it worked well
I got the mud hugger sl on the front which Iam very pleased with , Mudhugger SL I see they also do a fatbike front guard that looks like the enduro guard
Crud catcher on the down tube is a must to keep muck out of your eyes and also protects the battery and frame

Do you keep yours on the bike when traveling on the highway, or do you uninstall it?

I came back from biking only to park my car and find my Topeak Defender XC11 29" had completely broken off the bike.
It looks like it’s broken off at the struts.

The fender seemed fine on the ride, though I did have significant tire-rubbing pre-ride on full-sag and re-adjusted the fender height/angle afterwards. No crash at all. No brushes with trees, etc. The height of installation/angle seemed reasonable on the ride.

I use a Kuat NV 2.0 rack which does not interfere whatsoever with the fender. I did not come into contact with any tree limbs or overhands with the vehicle/bike.

I did notice a significant amount of whistling at highway speed (60-80 mph) that I assume was the fender. I also noticed that the fender itself was flopping around quite a bit in the air slip-stream (the end is very soft/flexible).

However, when I got home, the fender was completely broken off….and missing. (See photo). It’s just bizarre. Do you think the rubbing had compromised the strength of the struts, then the wind just worked it back and forth and it failed? It just seems unlikely but I know for sure nothing would have struck it without also hitting my car.

It's cold out, about 32F. I'm sure that makes the plastic even more brittle.
