Another ride today and no new leg damage due to socks...

...until I got home, lifted bike up onto repair stand and caught my knee with one of the pedal studs.
I mean seriously, wtf?? there's like 3" of bare flesh between sock and shorts hem.
I think there are certain things designed and made to desire flesh. I can imagine during their manufacture a ritual of evil incantation and a sprinkling of goats blood. They've had a fair bit of me too  You could try sprinkling the pins with holy water? Or satisfy them with someone else's flesh . Ask your mate to take it for a spin because it doesn't feel right.

Try searching amazon for soccer shin guards.
These seem like they might fit the bill and are a reasonable price:
RockTape RockGuards Protection Shin Guards (2 Sleeves)

Comfortable and effective.

I've played Ice Hockey my whole life and don't know what 'ice hockey socks' are...'cept the ones that go over your shin pads. link?
Socks with slash protection. Mine are ANSI 4, which apparently is also the desired rating for hand/arm protection in butchery and fish filleting.
Whether that means I can slash at my legs with a kitchen knife, I don't have the bottle to find out.

Haberdashery and cycling, incongruous bedfellows except in my household where they’ve been spooning for decades.

Now it’s winter, my little tootsies are cold and wet so I want to wear my seal skinz waterproof socks instead of the very successful hockey socks. However, I don’t want to lose the leg protection and two pairs of socks is out of the question.
If I cut the foot part off the ice hockey sock so I can wear my waterproof socks and the shin bit of the other socks like a leg warmer...
a) how do I cut cut-proof socks?
b) how do I stop the cut end from fraying? I’ve heard of using superglue but that goes all hard and scratchy.

Is there owt on market that would protect my lower legs, front and back from pedal gouging and general abuse?
I know there are shin and knee guards that are more DH orientated, but I'm thinking something lightweight for XC. Short of using the plastic Specialised pedals that came with my bike, I need something to stop my legs looking like a drug addict's forearms.

Would also be good for nettles, and I seem to swell up in hives at any point that contacts any form of plantlife.
I use football shin pads from Sports Direct. you can get a pair for around £8. Variety of colours. Great for stopping brambles. nettles and branches from ripping you to bits!!

Behold my beautiful pins.
One pair of expensive hockey socks with the feet cut off.

7 IDP leg guards

Not a lot of rear calf protection but say up really well I have tried several makes and so far (6 months ) they have been fine...
bit hot but they all are as far as I can tell.
Maybe over kill for trail rides but at my age cuts and scrapes take weeks to heal and any way who cares what I look like.....(other than 'er indoors)

All I've ever used was athletic tape. That's what helps me get going. I've had several injuries, and it never failed me. Some people praise it, some people find it uncomfortable. For me, it does wonders, as I said. I run in marathons, so there's a high chance I might confront tendonitis every now and then. Not pleasant at all, but it's the risk I'm taking it. I use dynaprohealth.com to buy it. My local pharmacist told me about it and that it's good quality. I don't know what else I could recommend to you... It would be best to try it and see if it works out for you, rather than listening to all opinions.

how about using soccer shin guards under your socks? cheap and light.
Cheap as in they aren't ripping us off for something thats been used in football and hockey for decades. £35 max is what you should be paying, and that will be for good ones.
£140 ??? a total pisstake. OK knees are included, but still. Add MTB use and quadruple the retail price.
All made in China for buttons anyhow.

Ooh they look good! What are they like at staying up?
The last thing I want to be doing is constantly pulling them up, or having to buy some suspenders!!! :ROFLMAO:
Hi Steve, I have some of these and they stay up well. But the 'kin pedals got there own back and gouged through the sock material and made a bloody hole (which the wife darned up easily) but the pad that sits within the sock did actually protect my shin, so no pedal-rash on that occasion. They also keep your legs warm and if you could pull them above your knees, you'd feel like Britany Spears (in that video!)

Yes, I too feel like Brittany Spears, but I doubt she'd bother with an old bugger like me!

The Leatt knee pads are bulky but very protective.........I use the zip up ones. The leg guards are overkill especially if all you are trying to protect against are pedal strikes. Whilst pedal strikes can be painfull the force is not very hard and the majority of the damage is done by the pins which tear skin for a pastime.........often in the same place everytime. I use GForm shin guards but usually only if I am pushing my limits on some jumps. You hardly know you are wearing them and they are effective......................except they do not protect the back of your legs which can also be a target for the pedals!! If you are suffering from pedal strikes and you wear trail pants this time of year, you are best wearing whatever pads you choose on top the trail pants or whilst you should avoid injury by wearing them you will damage an expensive pair of trail pants instead!!
Best bet of course is to work out why you get pedal strikes and sort the issue.

I thought my shinpad wearing days were behind me, but apparently not. Got these

I use these too in warm weather. Great. Also Mazon ones which are lighter cloth types from hockey. They all tuck under knee pads neatly. Alpinstars make one piece shin knee guards but I found the top of the knee pad rubbed and they were flimsy overall.
