Is my chain too short?

I recently put a 11-40T cassette in place of the stock 11-36 one. It seems to run fine and the only adjustment was a tweak of the B screw so the top pulley can clear the cog. The Deore MG592 derailleur is listed as having a max cog of 36T.

I am concerned that the chain seems a tad short for this bigger cog. What do you think?

Ye I would say so, when your shock is fully compressed there should still be a little movement on the derailleur, loads of videos on you tube Gmbn tech are idiot proof, asks how I know?

If your chain was correct with a 36 tooth sprocket then, for a 40 tooth and with the chain wrapping round half the sprocket, you need 2 more links (one each inner and outer).

You've bodged it "slightly" by running a mech with a larger cassette than recommended, but so long as it shifts fine you're winning!
The fact that the mech is designed to work with UP TO a 36t sprocket, your chain is actually better at the slightly shorter length you have it than it would be with 2 extra links. This is because as the mech cage rotates towards the front of the bike the closer to horizontal it gets the lower the TOP jockey wheel rotates downwards.
ie. more clearance in the 40T

Gary has provided the answer, but a quick test for a hardtail would be if the derailleur cage still has vertical movement, ie there's still play in the system.
