Hi

How do you insure your emtb? If it all?

I’m finding house insurance either covers e bikes or not at all. And if they do cover it’s £600 more expensive

But we only looked at 2 house insurers

Bike specific looks about £180 pa but what’s covered is not so clear and varies widely

Any advice please?

We're with Esure and it wasn't a big increase adding our two ebike to the house policy, though they stipulated that they had to be secured with Sold Secure Gold standard locks. But it doesn't cover theft away from home.

My Buildings & Contents policy is with RSA via a broker. For no extra charge, my bikes are covered for theft anywhere in Europe, for fire and damage inside the garage. So, no accidental damage whilst riding, but the policy also covers third party claims for millions. The only constraint is that the contents of the garage must not exceed £15k. So that has saved a few hundred pounds. I discovered recently that my hearing aids are also covered for everything except wear and tear, even losing them whilst crashing! That saves the £192/year that Boots would charge. My buildings & contents insurance is not looking too bad now.

I've said here before, but Pedalcover.co.uk gave us a really good quote for home cover. They were amazing when we were burgled for bikes at the end of 2019. Unhesitatingly recommend them and am a current happy customer (no other connection).

Here in New Zealand my contents insurance covers my e-mtb for a few cents extra. It's not only covered at home but anywhere else it may get stolen. I think it's covered if I was in a accident and the bike is unrepairable as well.

I've done some research a few years (2016) ago, when I first bought an ebike. I decided after 3 quotes at around £300 to £550 that it just isn’t worth it. Putting £500 a year away each year means I bought another E-Spesh gravel last year and can now enjoy both types of riding. Still love my Rotwild and with a new Brose motor and battery it’s as good as new! They are both gold secure chained to the wall at home. They are never left unsecured, only when I’m riding one of ‘em.
When you consider costs of parts and general upkeep, it‘s enough expense without paying insurance for a loss you may never get paid out On.

I used to use cycleplan but they were to expensive for two bikes so I transferred to my home insurance, as long as you can insure them to the same extent I have found it to be much much cheaper - about £200/year as opposed to £700/year

I’m on the hunt for new insurance myself. We get the keys to our new house on the 26th, we called to get our home insurance set back up and they’ve said they’ll only cover 1 bike now with the new policy.

Home insurance wouldn't cover the bike so got separate bike insurance. Think it was about £190 a year, new for old, accidental damage covered as well.

Is that for one bike? I’ll start making some phone calls tomorrow but I currently have 8 bikes so I imagine it’s going to be expensive. I guess it’s just motivation to get rid of some bikes that aren’t really ridden anymore.

Are you insuring against theft, or damage - like if you're rear ended and the bike is damaged on the rack - or both?
I did some research years ago and I'm pretty sure my homeowner's insurance covers it in the "property damage" part of the policy here in the U.S.

Yeah 1 bike. It's only whilst it's still new ish it makes sense but once depreciation really kicks in I'll look for another option.

Call Pedalcover. Honestly. They fully cover all my bikes and still had the most competitive house insurance quote we got this year.

I went with M&S as they were recommended on here for contents insurance. They work out a coat for the most expensive bike but any lesser value bikes are automatically covered as well. Must be kept in a locked room / garage

I gave them a call today, they can’t give me a quote because the address at our new house doesn’t exist yet. We get the keys on Thursday so maybe the address will show up then, not really sure how it works with new builds.

That's a bit frustrating. Hopefully not a more general problem, I can't remember what we did when we bought here.

I am with Eversure insurance, £12,000 cover for theft which can be at home or anywhere in the EU, accidental & malicious damage.
£1,000.000 public liability cover, £15,000 personal accident cover, new for old including all upgrades.

The cover is expensive at £382 a year and the bike if locked must use a diamond secure rated lock (Never used the lock as i never leave it out doors) but the piece of mind i have is priceless, i also did a lot of research and found Eversure process claims really fast, have brilliant customer reviews and do not have any small print that can get them out of paying up.

"Diamond Secure" When did that emerge? I had thought that Gold Secure was the top rank.

What are the key differences, anybody know?
Yes, I know I could spend ages on the internet, just wondered if anyone knows already.

By the way, when I was talking with my insurance broker about them taking on my bikes (pre emtb), we talked about gold secure bike chains and locks. I said that I spend a lot of money to get a light bike. An expensive bike makes it a target for thieves, which then means that insurance companies want me to carry about a chain and lock that weighs more than the weight I lost when buying the expensive bike! I told him that I would not be carrying such a chain around with me. I never let the bike out of my sight and I would rather throw the bike under a bus than let some idle thieving toerag take my bike. He was convinced and included the bikes without a premium increase. :)

Insurance can be tricky when it comes to e-bikes, especially when it affects your house insurance rates. It's a smart move to shop around for options, but it can be quite a task with the varying coverage and costs.
Yep…I just got a quote to cover half my bikes and it’s almost as much per year as my SUV! I asked 3 times if they were quoting me the right figure as I was really confused.

Santander (UK) just added my Rise to contents insurance for an additional £30 which I thought was good. Might find out otherwise if I have to claim . .

To insure your e-MTB, you have a few options. Many homeowners' insurance policies may cover e-bikes, but it can significantly raise your premium, as you've noticed. For bike-specific insurance, costs around £180 per year are common, but coverage can vary widely. Look for policies that include theft, damage, and liability coverage. Consider companies that specialize in bike insurance, such as Laka, Cycleguard, or Bicycle Insurance, as they may offer clearer terms and better coverage for your e-MTB. It's a good idea to compare quotes to find the best fit for your needs!
