Hope hoops ?

Wondering about wheel upgrades for my Vitus and looking at Hope enduro or 35w.
Anyone done this, pros & cons for either?

Hope hoops used to be really great value for money. Back when they used stans rims.
I have probably 6 sets of those (in 26")
I also probably have 20+ hope hubs.
I used to always stick with hope because their customer service was incredible, replacing broken hubs FOC after many years use and the fact that every spare part is available easily in the UK. Hope customer service just isn't like that anymore and as that was my main reason for staying loyal to them I've stopped buying anything from Hope.
For me, they all (eventually) crack - the hub shells/flanges. and the pick up isn't great (points of engagement). Neither is durability (pawls/bearings)
I've no idea what their rims are like though as I've never used a hope rim other than short rides on others bikes.

here's a hope hoop I cracked the body on a couple of months back. It went while stod up putting down the power on a steep grassy climb (in too high a gear really)

Personally. If I was going to be spending custom built wheelset money I'd be looking elsewhere for the hubs.

Plenty other folk love hope though

I still think they must be better than the dt's standard on the sommet.
When i changed the cassette the freehubwas chunked to bits.

TBF the DT 1900 wheelset on the sommet use pretty low rent hubs from the range DT do

Hope Freehubs do that too BTW. infact pretty much all alu freehub bodies do.

I have run Hope for years and they are solid performers. Haven’t heard anything good about their rims

There's an option of steel with the hopes

Yeah. I know. It doesn't improve the hub functionally though. Only cosmetically. Do the cassette lock ring up nice and tight and it becomes less of a problem.
XD freehub is another option but I personally wouldn't be keen on a 10t sprocket on an Ebike.

Do people still use mavic rims? They used to be super strong back in my DH days. Got a rim that took years of abuse and is still true to within 1mm

I'd just be looking at DT Swiss from higher up the range with minimum 350 hubs and 35mm inner rims

The çanyon I've ordered comes with DT Swiss H1700 Hybrid wheels. Hoping they're decent. Seem to be built up a bit for ebikes from what I've read but based on 350 hubs and have the star ratchet system.

I'm considering a Mavic wheel upgrade for my Levo as they do a couple of ebike specific models (E XA) - can't find any reviews tho so would welcome any input if anyone's gone for these. Had Mavic on a Spicy a few years ago and they were faultless over 3 years of abuse. Look pretty cool as well with the flat spokes and rim milling.

just choose a non ebike wheelset that suits your needs

I get where your coming from but as Mavic don't offer this rim profile on any of their other wheels and rate it to 150kgs over their normal 120kgs, its the closest were gonna get.

I'm leaning towards 30mm but need to do some more research on using plus tyres on 30mm rims before biting the bullet.

Ive just had a reply from hope saying the enduro rim is triple cavity and takes tyres up to 2.4 whereas the 35's are single cavity and take tyres up to 2.8, I suppose this I see why they were described as soft altho hope rekon they're equally as strong

35 mm Int rim width if your using plus size tyres 2.5 or bigger .
Spank do a wheel that’s stronger intended for ebike use , they call it the 395 hybrid wheel I think . Been impressed so far with them on my bike not had to true them yet or replace any spokes , the hubs seem nice quality when I’ve serviced them . I’ve not been gentle on them iether .

I'm nowhere near 120kg. Mavic have always offered certain rims as wheelset only packages. They are actually available seperately but an absolute nightmare to get hold of.
I just looked up the E-XA wheelset
it's laughable that if it's being sold as an E-bike specific wheelset.
Firstly because it's 24 spoke (25mm rim) and 28 spoke (35mm rim)
Secondly because it uses 4 pawls but only 2 engage at a time (to create a faster pickup).
Thirdly because "E-bike specific rim profile" C'mon FFS
Seems to me Mavic are simply jumping on the bandwagon in a lazy attempt to capture a new and credulous market.

The best upgrade you can do with wheels is learn how to build and true them. All handbuilt (by a decent builder) wheels are stronger and more reliable than off the shelf machine built wheelsets.
Not to say machine built wheels can't be very good VFM. Just true/re-tension them yourself when you get them.
Building wheels isn't difficult, you simply need time to learn lacing, patience and practice.

Time - I barely get time to ride my bike let alone learn to maintain it

I'm just after some reliable plus size wheels to replace the stock Levo Carbon Comp ones as I've had to straighten the rear half a dozen times to ensure it remains airtight (tubeless) after flat spotting it.

Me n bike weigh about 100kg combined. I'd be interested in recommendations up to about 600 quid a set.
