I got a brilliant discount on a 2019 Merida eOneSixty 900e.

Forgot to factor in the cost of locks and trackers and alarms and the tubeless setup... Just as well that we've got lockdown cos I've no dosh left!

This is the bike I'm currently looking at. Was £6150 on Trekz, has been reduced to £3999 and on a cycle to work scheme I can get it for £2110 which is an outragous deal.

I have been looking at the Decathlon Stilus and the Voodoo Zobop E8000 but the Merida looks pretty serious, at that price especially.

How are you finding the bike so far and did you look into it before buying it?

I did lots of research and opted for it because
1. It appears to be a classic.
2. There are lots of spares and the motor has a good reputation (unlike the specialised levos).
3. I have to have a removable battery for charging at home or work, and I dont think that the current vogue for hiding the battery in the frame, makes any sense whatsoever. It's a cosmetic decision, made during the time when e bikes were considered 'cheating' and scorned.
I think that weve all moved on, and that 'if you've got it - flaunt it' is a better style.
3. Aluminium alloy frame is more robust. Carbon is great for low weight but that's not an issue with a motor. Also, carbon deteriorates over time in sunlight?
4. Actually the weight was a massive consideration for me.
Living in a tenement in Edinburgh means carrying the frame up stairs, but I remove the battery first and the bike is under 20kg. If you try one of those solid fuel sacks at Tesco's you will see.
That also applies to the car roof rack although I'm thinking that realistically I will have to get a towbar mounted bike carrier.
5. Additional expense on locks and alarms and tracking devices. Considerable £££.
(I got a wearable lite lock band which it luminous bright lemon and compliments the bike perfectly!!)
I also got a set of cushcore tyre inserts direct from the company in the states. Take care to get the right size - I couldn't find them in stock here in the UK, at least not for a good price. I had great fun putting them in and setting up tubless, but that involved getting an Airshot canister to inflate. It all adds up to quite a bit of dosh.
They send pedals with the bike, but they're crap.
They do not supply a shock pump, so you need one of them.
6. Finally, It is really important to get a shimano registered bike shop to do the software/firmware update to the little computer gizmo, over a wired connection.
Do NOT make the mistake I did and try to do it over bluetooth and fail and then end up having to send it back to Shimano for a complete reboot..
No fun.
7. So, I havent been out on it much cos of lockdown.. just practicing track stands and shifting my weight around on it and trying to get the feel for it in the nearest park.
I'm 5'6" so I got the small size and I'm glad that I did.
I still feel a bit wary of it tbh.
But the turning circle is really small! :D
I cant climb steep (stepped) gradients at slow speed ( I'm going to have to practice getting my weight over the bars and using the boost power)
But on a flat surface the ease of going up serious inclines is just amazing.
(I hadn't tried an e-bike before)


Value.. yeh the wheelset alone are worth well over £1k.
This COVID19 has really brought it home to me that you've got to live it while you can...
